Maxton Hall season 2 episode 5’s big breakdown can only be bad news for one character – and it’s not James
Warning: spoiler for Maxton Hall season 2 episode 5 ahead.
We're only a week away from the Maxton Hall season 2 finale airing on Prime Video, yet the show's ongoing drama has just taken the most unexpected turn.
As things were left in season 2 episode 4, James (Damian Hardung) and Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten) were about to be discovered by James' father Mortimer (Fedja van Huêt) after his flight to New York was canceled by bad weather. Mortimer wants James to marry into wealthy classmate Elaine's (Eli Riccardi) family, and has expressly forbid James to even speak to Ruby again.
In true Romeo & Juliet fashion (without the deaths), this hasn't happened. But after Maxton Hall season 2 episode 5 – where Ruby and James are hardly keeping their relationship a secret – Mortimer is sent into overdrive.
This leads to a breakdown, but that's not going to affect James or daughter Lydia (Sonja Weißer), who is pregnant with twins... it's going to affect Ruby instead.
Mortimer's breakdown in Maxton Hall season 2 episode 5 will destroy Ruby's chance of a better future
Let's think about it. Mortimer's anger is going to be directed somewhere, but even though he's infuriated with his children, he doesn't want to sully the family name. Pride is the most important factor here, and the Beaufort family needs to keep up social appearances.
Ruby, however, is the perfect target. Mortimer already dislikes her because she's a scholarship student and doesn't come from money, and she's been secretly dating James on top of that. Season 2 episode 5 has already proved she'll be the one affected in one obvious scene: she's lost her scholarship with local influential businesswoman Alice Campbell (Proschat Madani).

After applying for Campbell's student scheme, Ruby pulled off a successful event in episode 3 that led to her receiving a full scholarship to study at Oxford. Not only has this been Ruby's dream since the first episode of season 1, Campbell also offered her a part-time job with her while Ruby studies.
With Ruby's life and dreams already being impacted by Mortimer, she's now less likely than ever to want to spend time with James – no matter how much she loves him. Essentially, this means Mortimer wins, making everybody unhappy in the process.
However, it's probably what we want to happen if there's going to be a Maxton Hall season 3. It's far too easy for Ruby and James to happily be together in the season 2 finale, so there needs to be a new level of peril if we want more episodes of the show.
Mortimer has just given this to us on a plate... so in a roundabout way, we should be grateful. Only problem is, we have to see Ruby suffer even more in the process.
