When snowboarding debuted at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, in 1998, it consisted of just four events: men's and women's halfpipe and giant slalom. Since then, the sport has grown substantially in popularity to the point that the snowboarding program at Milano Cortina 2026 will consist of 11 events across five disciplines.

For those hoping to witness huge jumps and complicated tricks, the Big Air, Slopestyle and Halfpipe events are not to be missed. In these, athletes compete in a best-of-three runs competition, throwing down their best moves to get the highest score from the judges. Athletes to watch out for include Austria’s Anna Gasser, Japan’s Hirano Ayumu and Australia's Scotty James.

In contrast to these technical disciplines, Snowboard Cross and Parallel Giant Slalom are speed events where it’s all about crossing the line in the fastest time possible. Athletes can reach speeds of 110kph as they tackle challenging courses where one wrong move can end their medal dreams. In the slalom, Italy will be hoping Maurizio Bormolini can deliver gold in the men’s event, while the team event in Snowboard Cross, the likes of Great Britain, Austria and France will all be battling for victory.
