Zattoo is a European cord-cutting service that carries the channels of many of the continent's biggest free-to-air public service broadcasters, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Rai, Mediaset, ARD, RBB, ProSieben, ZDF, ORF and France TV.

One of Zattoo's standout qualities is the amount of live sport it unlocks access to. We're talking the NFL, F1, domestic soccer, including the Champions League and FA Cup, international soccer and rugby, such as the Six Nations, cricket, ATP and WTA tennis, and lots of live cycling.

Being a pan-European venture, the geo-blocking that Zattoo is subject to is less restrictive than normal, but to get the most out of the service you'll want to pair it with a strong VPN.

Can I watch Zattoo for free?

The German and Swiss versions of the service each offer a free Zattoo tier.

However, it doesn't include a lot of the big channels, smart TV streaming is limited to 30 hours per month in Germany and 10 hours per month in Switzerland, and it only works on one device at a time.

The vast majority of the paid Zattoo plans, meanwhile, come with a 30-day free trial.

Where does Zattoo work?

Paid subscribers to Zattoo Austria and Zattoo Germany can use the service in select EU countries* and overseas territories**. After 90 days, overseas access will be cut off until the account is used in the country of registration again.

Zattoo Germany's Premium and Ultimate plans can be used as normal (for 90 days) in EEA countries Iceland and Norway too.

Zattoo Switzerland subscribers, however, can only access recordings from outside the country.

Traveling outside Switzerland or Europe? You can use a VPN to watch Zattoo as if you were right at home. NordVPN is our top pick of the options.

Use a VPN to watch Zattoo from abroad

Why is a VPN a good option to watch Zattoo from abroad?

Zattoo operates in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. However, even if you're a paying customer, depending on your subscription plan and the region in which you register with the service, you might not be able to watch Zattoo from abroad.

That’s where a VPN comes in handy – not only does it let you tap into your home streaming services from anywhere, it also protects you from potential online threats.
