Untamed season 2: key information

- Unknown whether any more of the season 1 cast will return
- Co-creators want to make Turner "very uncomfortable"

Untamed season 2 is officially happening, which might be surprising news given it was only meant to be a limited series. But, not all that surprising when you consider it soared to the top of Netflix charts, drawing in 24.6 million views, and put itself in contention to be one of the best Netflix series.

Season 1 saw Kyle Turner, an ISB agent, on a hunt for a killer set to the backdrop of the iconic Yosemite National Park. After a young woman's body is found, Turner quickly realizes there's a lot more to the mystery than what first meets the eye. And as he tackles the dark secrets hidden within the park, he must also address the ones haunting him. While the season 1 finale seemed pretty conclusive, Turner's not done solving mysteries yet.

So, here's what we know so far about Untamed season 2 from the potential release date, predicted cast, story news, rumors and more.

Untamed season 2: is there a release date?

When it comes to an Untamed season 2 release date, there's not one yet. But Netflix has revealed that it is absolutely on the way.

Despite coming to the streamer as a 'limited series', it's been proven that sometimes if the viewers love it enough there's still an opportunity for more. Even when the show seemed pretty tied up by the season 1 finale.

In a statement on Tudum by the show's star, Eric Bana, he said: "I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of Untamed to life.

"The response to season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique. I can't wait to take Kyle on his next journey."

With season 1 only premiering in July, I'd predict we'll be waiting until 2027 for the next installment.

Untamed season 2: has a trailer been released?

For the Untamed season 2 trailer, the cast and crew would at least have wrapped production for it to land. And, with no news of filming in sight yet, it won't be dropping for a while.

For season 1, a teaser dropped a month before the show released on Netflix with a full trailer just weeks before. So, be sure to circle back and I'll update here as soon as I hear more.

Untamed season 2: predicted cast

Thanks to Tudum, we know that Eric Bana will be reprising his role as the titular Kyle Turner investigating a whole new mystery. But, when it comes to the rest of the cast, it's hard to say who will be returning.

Here's the Untamed season 2 predicted cast alongside the confirmed Bana:

  • Eric Bana as Kyle Turner
  • Rosemarie DeWitt as Jill Bodwin
  • Ezra Wilson as Caleb
  • Lily Santiago as Naya Vasquez
  • William Smillie as Bruce Milch
  • Raoul Max Trujillo as Jay Stewart

Viewers watched as Turner rode out of Yosemite National Park in the season 1 finale, leaving his colleagues and ex-wife, Jill, behind. But, given how big a role they played in Kyle's life in season 1, they may well return.

Co-creator Mark L. Smith told Tudum, when it comes to the cast of season 1: "We're trying to figure that stuff out because my God, we loved our cast and we loved the characters that they brought to life. In an ideal world, we would be able to pull something off."

Kyle also had visions of his late son, Caleb, in season 1, and while he made a decision to continue living his life in spite of his grief, Caleb could still have a part to play in Kyle's onward journey.

One character that will not be returning, of course, is Paul Souter (Sam Neill) after the unnerving truth about his involvement in the death of Lucy Cooke was finally revealed. More on this below.

Full spoilers for Untamed season 1 to follow.

Untamed season 1 saw Turner team up with Agent Vasquez to solve the mystery surrounding Lucy Cooke's death. And what it unearthed was corruption, drugs, lies and eventually, a heartbreaking revelation of murder.

But, while Untamed season 1 was only meant to be a mini series, co-creator Mark L. Smith told Tudum: "Ellie and I envisioned it as a stand-alone six episodes. But then the more that we got into it, it was just such a great cast... it was just like, 'Oh yeah, how do we keep this going?'"

And how do they keep it going? The season 1 finale saw an explosive ending which solved Turner's case. And so, he found himself leaving Yosemite National Park to free himself of the emotional turmoil that clutched at him from the depths of its beautiful landscape.

But, Yosemite National Park wasn't Kyle's first park and it clearly won't be his last. For season 2, Mark says: "This will be the latest and it'll be more impactful for him."

Ellie reveals for season 2, they're looking for another park that's totally unrelated to Yosemite: "We've done Yosemite. What's the next park that could feel different from that? Each national park has such a different cultural identity, geographical identity. Being able to explore those places through the case and through Turner's journey is what's so fascinating."

Adding: "Whichever park we choose will be a character and it will kind of play a role in Turner's emotional frame of mind."

For Mark, it's all about putting Turner out of his comfort zone. He's left Yosemite behind and now it's time for something new: "He was the one leading this charge, and people followed him. And now, [we're] putting Kyle on his back foot, making him very uncomfortable...

"This time we get to follow Turner into a park and let him lead us, and we stumble along with him as he's kind of finding his way."

So, whatever they have planned next for Turner, it looks set to be an even more complicated landscape to navigate than the last.

Will there be more seasons of Untamed?

A limited series no more, but what about a season 3? (Image credit: Netflix)

Given that Untamed was originally released as a limited series, even getting a season 2 is excellent (and surprising) news. Anything past this, for now, is unknown.

Of course, season 2 opens the door for a lot more from Turner, especially considering there's 63 national parks across the US. 63 seasons? Very unlikely. But a season 3? Perhaps there's hope.

It took a couple of weeks after the season 1 finale to renew for season 2, so I'd expect any updates won't be available until after season 2 has hit the streaming platform. Check back here in future and I'll be sure to keep an ear to the forest floor.
