Nintendo reveals official title, teaser, and cast for its Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel – and one big name is missing from its line-up

Nintendo has officially confirmed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the title of its next animated film.

The sequel to Nintendo and Universal's multi-billion dollar-spinning first venture, aka The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was announced during September 2025's Nintendo Direct live show. The title unveiling was accompanied by a teaser trailer and initial cast reveal, plus a reminder that Mario's next big-screen adventure will arrive on April 3, 2026.

For those unaware, the title of Nintendo and Universal's latest silver-screen team-up takes its cue from the Japanese game maker's Super Mario Galaxy series. The sub-franchise's two entries see the legendary plumber take a trip into outer space after Bowser does what he does best: kidnapping Princess Peach and imprisoning her because, well, he's Bowser.

Speaking during this month's Nintendo Direct livestream, though, Chris Meledandri, founder of the animation company Illumination, which made The Super Mario Bros. Movie and will lead development on its sequel, said Galaxy's animated adaptation won't be a one-to-one translation of the story that plays out in either game.

"While the Super Mario Galaxy games are a core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era," Meledandri teased. Interesting, very interesting...

As I mentioned earlier in this article, the initial cast of one of 2026's most anticipated new movies was also revealed, including many of the original film's voice actors.

Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) were all confirmed to be returning. Yoshi is also set to feature in this flick after his appearance was teased in The Super Mario Bros. Movie's mid-credits scene, though a voice actor wasn't revealed for everyone's favorite green dinosaur. Rosalina, a major supporting cast member of the Galaxy games, is all but confirmed to appear by default, too.

Curiously, Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, wasn't named alongside his forebear's co-stars. However, with rumors circulating that Nintendo's great ape is being lined up to star in his own solo animated movie, this is the likely reason for his absence in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Elsewhere, Nintendo President Shigeru Miyamoto said The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will headline Mario's 40th anniversary celebrations, which will run throughout 2026. Hopefully, we won't have to wait until the turn of the year for an actual trailer.
