England’s Ashes hopes came to a brutal end in Adelaide as a Travis Head and Pat Cummins-inspired display guided Australia to the urn.
Ben Stokes’ side were always chasing the game after collapsing to 168 for 8 at one stage of their first innings. A second-innings century from hometown hero Head, combined with six wickets across the match from Cummins, powered Australia to an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.
Questions are now being firmly asked of head coach Brendon McCullum, captain Ben Stokes and managing director Rob Key. First, however, England still have two matches to play and will be desperate to get on the board, having not won a Test in Australia since 2011.
The Boxing Day Test at the MCG is next up, and tasks do not come much tougher. England will be hurting, while Australia will be keen to capitalise as they push for a 5-0 clean sweep.
Nathan Lyon will miss the Test after injuring his hamstring in Adelaide and Pat Cummins has withdrawn himself after securing the series victory. Meanwhile England may make multiple changes to their XI. Ollie Pope’s position is under particular scrutiny after consecutive low scores at number three, with Jacob Bethell a potential replacement.
