Yellowstone spinoff Marshals season 2 won't be losing Kayce Dutton as Luke Grimes 'signs new contract' — but Dutton Ranch and wider Western Taylor Sheridan world could also benefit
Grimes is happy to play Dutton 'for years'
Marshals: A Yellowstone Story hasn't even finished airing its first season on CBS and Paramount+, but season 2 is already greenlit.
This in itself is something of a miracle. When Kayce Dutton's (Luke Grimes) desire to leave the ranch and join the US Marshals kicked off the Yellowstone spinoff series in March, fans quickly complained about its generic police procedural formula.
There have been a few less subtle nods to the main Taylor Sheridan series in the interim, but nothing has truly scratched the surface of what we once had... or at least, that's my opinion.

Speaking to Radio Times, the actor confirmed, "I mean, I've signed a contract, so I have to do it as long as people kind of watch it for the next, however, many years. But if there was ever a character that I was going to play for 10 years or more, this is the one."
Of course, Grimes is joking about the potential future of Marshals itself — but I think his comments also apply to more Taylor Sheridan shows than it seems.
Kayce Dutton will appear in other Taylor Sheridan shows — it's just a matter of time
Grimes continues, "Obviously there are times when I think about it all at once, and I think, ‘Oh, my God, how many more years? And this is crazy, and this is a lot of work.’ But then I remember this is Kayce, so I'm good. I get to be in this beautiful place in the mountains, and it's just awesome. It's all the things I wanted to play as a young actor and as a boy, all rolled into one."

If the powers that be behind Taylor Sheridan's juggernaut Western empire are smart, they'll reap every possible benefit from this new contract. Amazingly (if you know me), I'd suggest they'd take a leaf out of Marvel's book, creating something similar to the Avengers.
Everyone loves a crossover — just look at the global box office performance of the MCU's Infinity War and Endgame. Sheridan has the TV equivalent of a Marvel empire at his hands, and it's time we saw it intersect.
If you've read Jasmine Valentine content before, you'll know that I'm already convinced that Marshals and upcoming spinoff Dutton Ranch are going to cross over.
This is mainly because Dutton Ranch is due to begin airing from May 15, but Marshals season 1 doesn't wrap up until May 24. But with mixed feedback on Marshals, what better way to win fans back (and return to Yellowstone glory) than reuniting Kayce and his sister Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly)?
As far as I'm concerned, Grimes' quotes are another step in the right direction. Mark my words... Marshals season 2 is going to be even more fulfilling for longtime Yellowstone fans.
