Outer Banks 'gets the Yellowstone treatment' as new prequel goes ahead at Netflix — and fans are more open to it after divisive season 5 ending
As always, not everybody's happy
- An Outer Banks prequel is currently 'coming together' at Netflix
- The working title is Kildare, with creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke spearheading the series
- Is set to follow 'the origins of Kildare’s deep social divide in a prequel series set 20 years before the events of the main series'
Spoilers for Outer Banks season 5 ahead.
It doesn't matter whether you loved or loathed the Outer Banks season 5 ending — Netflix has already moved onto a prequel series, which is currently "coming together" behind the scenes.
With a working title of Kildare, original creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke will spearhead the story, which is set to follow "the origins of Kildare’s deep social divide in a prequel series set 20 years before the events of the main series."
“We’re working on the script,” Pate told Deadline. “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
We've just left the main series after watching the Pogues track down the Royal Merchant gold and buy back their land. John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) also got officially married.
If anything, the season 5 ending may make fans more willing to embrace the upcoming prequel — especially if it can rectify one overlooked storyline.
'I was hesitant... but I think it could work'
"You know... I was a little hesitant on this prequel show, but I think it could work. A lot of Kooks from the show started off as Pogues then made their way to the top," one fan posted on Reddit.
"It can still be bad, but I bet we can expect more Big John, the mother of the Camerons, and maybe more Sheriff Peterkin?"

A second weighed in, "So we're getting the Yellowstone treatment. They'll do prequels on Topper's family, Cameron's families and add in Big John story."
While the above are popular narrative overviews for the new prequel to take, there's one particular storyline that could be explained more thoroughly than it ever has before.
"I think this would be a great way to bring in more of Kie's [Kiara's] parents and why her Dad went from Pogue to completely hating them," a third replies.
From season 1, it's been assumed that this has come down to bad reputations and general suspicion around who your child chooses to hang out with. But arguably, the main Outer Banks series hasn't done the best job of putting Kiara's (Madison Bailey) backstory to bed.
"This sounds awesome!! Considering the adults/parents seem to all have a connection, it’d be cool to see it unfold. Especially Wards come up from Pogue to Kook," a fourth fan weighed in.
For now, we've got no idea about story specifics, the production schedule or potential release window. Until Netflix gives us more details, all we can do in the meantime is hope that the prequel meets our expectations.
