We just got an update about A24's Texas Chainsaw Massacre — and it gives us a huge clue about the plot
The new horror movie could feature some underrated characters
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Curry Barker has teased a little about his plans for the movie
- The new addition to the franchise may contain characters from Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2
- This suggests Barker is looking beyond just Leatherface, the franchise's iconic antagonist
In recent weeks, I've been cautiously optimistic about the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, especially when I learned that Curry Barker is directing it. Now we have been given a teaser of what to expect from Barker's script.
This week, Barker's highly anticipated Obsession arrives in theaters, with the new horror movie receiving a glowing 95% Rotten Tomatoes score from both audiences and critics. He's proven he's a strong new name for the horror genre, and his vision for Texas Chainsaw Massacre has got many of us excited.
In an interview with Polygon, Barker revealed he's a big fan of 1986's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, and he's aiming to incorporate one specific aspect of that film into his version.
He said: "I don't want to give up too much — I haven't even started writing it yet — but I like Texas Chainsaw 2 a lot and I think I have a pretty good idea of what people like about that movie."
"I liked that there was a different tone," Barker added. "It was like they were onto something in the '80s with Texas Chainsaw 2 that we're finally exploring now, which is this eerie comedy, but that turns really dark. So that's something that I want to tap into."
What do we know about A24's Texas Chainsaw Massacre so far?
Since it's in the early stages, the short answer is not a lot. However, Barker did hint that his script may lean on some of the characters that appear in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2. So there's a very real chance we'll see some underrepresented characters in his movie.
"I really loved certain characters in that movie," Barker told Polygon. "I'm very excited to incorporate characters that we haven't seen a lot of."

Considering we've seen loads of Bubba Sawyer aka Leatherface over the years, it would certainly be a refreshing change to have more of the Sawyers and those affiliated with them depicted on screen, especially when backed by a big studio like A24.
Based on this interview, Barker's Texas Chainsaw could include family patriarch Drayton 'Cook' Sawyer and brother/conspirator Robert Sawyer aka Chop Top. If we go beyond the family, we could even see Lieutenant Boude 'Lefty' Enright, who attempts to stop the Sawyers' murder spree.
Right now it's all speculation, but I'm looking forward to learning more about this movie.
