The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 featured on every podium during the 2024 Summer Olympics, but it's recently been overtaken by the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 as the latest flip phone (alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7) on the market.

More than just a compact flip phone that's easy to take selfies with, Sure, it's a powerful, durable and versatile machine that previously held the gold medal in our list of the best flip phones.

The best feature of this device compared to competitors is its durability. While it's still not as tough as a non-folding screen, but you won't have to worry about it sitting in your pocket or falling into a puddle. Its excellent performance doesn't just boil down to "good AI tools", either. It's also just as powerful as the Z Fold 6, despite it's dramatically smaller frame.

Of course, that kind of performance in a compact flip phone doesn't come cheap, so buying it outright and pairing it with one of our best SIM-only plans can be a scary prospect.

Choosing to pair it with one of the best phone plans from Vodafone, Optus and Telstra lets you pay off your device in instalments. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is out of stock at Optus (the only major telco supplying it) as of writing. We've listed the best outright deals in the widget below, and the best Z Flip 7 plans below.

Vodafone is no longer celebrating its doubled network coverage with discounts and double data, but it's still the best option for the all-new Z Flip 7. You'll now get 60GB of data and unlimited international texts, on top of the unlimited standard calls and texts. This deal is actually cheaper than the best Z Flip 6 plan available from Optus.

Total cost over 24 months is AU$2,820.72

Again, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is not in stock at any major telco – making Vodafone's offering on the Z Flip 7 the best plan available. That's not a bad thing, though. This bigger-data plan from Vodafone is almost AU$20 cheaper than the Optus alternative on the older model. This plan also adds unlimited international calls and texts on top of the 180GB of data and standard calls/texts found in the small plan.

Total cost over 24 months is AU$3,060.72

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 proved in 2024 that Samsung knows foldable phones better than anybody – even Motorola with its cult Razr family. Rather than colourful plastic and sacrificing power for cheaper prices, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the most polished and refined foldable phone you can buy, barring maybe the far more pricey Fold 6 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Looking at the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in its unfolded state – which is how it arrives in the box – you could be excused for not realising it's a foldable phone. The hinge is only barely visible, and it's exceptionally straight and rigid.

The slighter-than-ever crease isn't all this phone's design has going for it, either. The overall fit and finish of the Flip 6 is highly impressive, looking almost like an iPhone 15 Pro (in the best way possible) when open.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is perhaps a bit cautious compared to its newest flip phone competitor, the Motorola Razr 2024, with a smaller cover display that we struggled to do much with. That's not such a bad thing, though – one colleague over at Tom's Guide actually found himself reducing his screen time due to the cover display and its ability to get the necessities done without being bombarded by a thousand distractions on the main screen.

As for how AI works on the Flip 6, again Samsung has taken a cautious approach. However, what it lacks in abundance is made up for in quality – letting users have fun with unique features and experiment with the future. Samsung gets right what others don’t, like writing style suggestions, and scene optimisation in the cameras.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is remarkably powerful. In our slew of benchmark tests, it actually beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max in multi-core performance, the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro in some gaming tests and, perhaps most surprisingly, the bigger Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't have a performance edge over the Z Flip 6.

While it performs admirably, if you're looking for the best camera phone, then the Flip 6 is not for you. Similarly, its battery life also isn't overly impressive, perhaps because Samsung opted for the overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ‘for Galaxy’ chipset that delivers such satisfying power. And, while durability is much improved, the IP48 rating means this phone is not dust-resistant, so you need to be extra careful with the foldable display. There’s also no DeX support to make this phone a portable PC (as there is with the Fold) but you can still connect it to an external display.

Perhaps most importantly, this phone will get 7 years of major Android OS updates, which is a huge vote of confidence from Samsung, especially for a foldable phone – committing support until 2031, presumably through Android 21.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 might not be as exciting or flamboyant as its flipping competition, but it's the most powerful, the most durable, and the one that we'd trust the most. It feels solid and looks great, and it fits in anywhere. There's a reason it tops our list of the best flip phones.
