Sky 3D is coming to homes and pubs in the UK 3rd April, with Chelsea vs Man Utd the first game to be available to the public shown in 3D.
The day also marks the launch of the Sky 3D channel in homes, but this will not be showing the match – merely a showreel of selected 3D footage.
After the Chelsea vs Man Utd game, Sky has vowed to show five more games in 3D and only in pubs before the end of the season – although these are to be confirmed.
Non-Premiership fans, however, will be pleased to learn that the Coca-Cola Football League Play-Off Finals from Wembley Stadium at the end of May.
Speaking about the 3D channel, Brian Lenz, Sky's Director of Product Design and TV Product Development, explained: "It's fitting that one of the biggest games of the season will be the launch pad for our pioneering Sky 3D service. With 3D, seeing really is believing, so it's great news that over a thousand pubs across country will be able to show the magic of 3D to their customers."
Passive tech in pubs
Sky has struck a deal with LG to supply 'over a thousand' pubs in the UK with 3D TVs, which use the cheaper passive technology to create the illusion.
Both active and passive 3D TVs are compatible with the channel but it makes sense that the cheaper glasses are provided in pubs.
Sky previewed the 3D channel earlier this year to select members of the public and journalists, including TechRadar.
Although the 3D channel in the home will be a showreel to begin with, Sky is hoping to bring movies, sport, documentaries, entertainment and arts content later in the year.
The channel will initially be available for free for customers who subscribe to Sky's top channels and HD pack.

9. There's no "active" vs "passive" glasses format war. All 3DTV manufacturers are selling active-glasses solutions for the home because only active-glasses solutions can do full HD 1080p.

7. Oh god, it's another format war: active vs. passive technology.
I'll wait for a few years for the manufacturers to make their minds up with which one to stick with.
If I had £2,000 to spend, I wouldn't buy a tv with it all. I'd buy a £400-700 tv and the rest for a nice holiday.
I would be more interested in a TV with TiVo integrated in it than I would about 3D.
It would be nice to be able to rent films through your tv. Might tempt me away from utorrent.
There's barely any 3D content to justify and investment of over £2,000.
3D in the Cinema is one thing. 3D in the home, wouldn't even compare well against 3D in the cinema.

6. I just can't get excited about 3d. Unless you've got a 2d set and a 3d set side by side are you really going to see a difference worth throwing away your 40inch flat screen for? Put it another way, how often have you been watching a footie match on TV thinking it's just not realistic, it looks so flat. Personally, never. It's the technology equivalent of the emperors new clothes.

5. How is this going to work? They're going to have to have hundreds of pairs of glasses at the ready.

4. i'm looking forward to the 3D release. Hell of a match to start it with too.
I was at the 3D Arsenal V Man utd match, and i didn't have any problem with the glasses giving me a headache, although i will say sitting square to the screen makes a big difference!!
Took some pictures when i was there which are on my blog:

3. Get your facts right. It's Manchester United vs Chelsea that Sky will be showing in 3D, not "Chelsea v Manchester United". The match is at Old Trafford.

1. I dont think enough is being made of the difference between active and passive 3d.
It's like light and day.
UHT and full cream.
1080p and 2005 Youtube.
active tech became viable but it's expensive. tv companies want to sell "3D" as a whole so they have to package this nasty old passive tech alongside it.
the consumer will become confused and end up disappointed.
