HTC has just sent us a statement - Android 2.2 is coming to the HTC Desire from this weekend.
Though don't get super-excited just yet - if you've got an operator-locked handset, you won't be getting it straight away.
Why? The update will only initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. HTC says "operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks' time."
Humph. So unless you paid out for an unlocked Desire, you'll most likely be waiting around for a little while.
"The Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend," said HTC in its statement. "As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense."
"The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC's App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, though the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes."
If you've got an HTC Desire, you'll be notified the over-the-air update is available to download when your phone automatically checks for software updates - again that will depend on your network.
As for the upgrade, HTC says the update won't delete any of your phone's content. Due to the size of the update, the manufactuer also advises using Wi-Fi to download it. You don't say.

35. Hmm - HTC say they are rolling the update out, but its not to all unlocked phones simultaneously. They indicated that they are rolling it out in 'batches' and said wait a day or two. I guess this is so their servers aren't overwelmed.

34. Chaps and chapesses - did your phone really update to 2.2? I have run the update process on my phone, the update process ran, but it still is 2.1 (checked software version). The phone is an unlocked version running over Orange. Thanks

29. Is anyone else having problems interacting with flash content on web pages? I'm taking about sites where you have to select options (eg. car dealer such as VW) - I'm finding drop down boxes and scroll bars work erratically at best. Might just be me but would be interested to hear how others find flash content.

27. @bradavon I don't know if you ran any quadrant benchmark tests before the update but if you were to run one after the update you would see a leap in performance...almost double that of 2.1
There are reports of that in most Desire/Android forums and my own tests confirm it. Real world performance for me is a lot faster as well. Esp the "Manage Apps" menu. It just flies up, I used to have to wait about 3-5secs for it to populate.
Have more of a play with it and you might notice, then again you might not but...definitely not a placebo :)

26. A file manager won't help. That can only clear storage off the SD card, not internal storage. Go to Application Management, order by Size and uninstall/clear cache/clear application data on the biggest ones.
p.s - The Wifi tethering is nice but unlike others my HTC Desire doesn't seem any faster or slower than it did before. Are you sure it's not a placebo?

23. I have the disire on Orage - checked for the update- and its available!! Just installed.
I've noticed the new apps/widgets (nice)
But here are my grumbles...
SWYPE doesn't work any more (probably the best feature on the phone) - admittedly still in beta and I'll email them tonight!
And I'm gobsmacked that so many 1st party apps from google can't be moved to SD card - my main criticism of this phone is how quickly I ran out of space to install apps - I have hardly any installed, yet my phone it constantly complaining about being low on space - not sure if there's a bug, but I have file manager and am removing virtually everything I can - just to try and get google earth running.
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE this phone, but the 2.2 update hasn't lit my candle as of yet...

22. Hey guys...quick heads up if you are updating from a stock rom if your phone was previously branded. Make sure your goldcard is in the phone before starting your ota update otherwise you'll get caught in a perpetual reboot cycle. It was easy enough to roll back so no danger of bricking but it'll be easier for you if you if you start it right in the first place :)
The update itself is AWESOME. I didn't think the Desire could get any better but its now even faster (which I didn't think was possible) web browsing is slick and smooth WITH Flash and the wifi tethering is so easy and works brilliantly. I attached my iPad to it...quick and painless!!
This phone is going to take some beating.

20. @ nebulaoperator
You go on your phone, then settings, then about phone, then system software updates, then "check now" :)
