NordVPN — currently the top-rated provider in our best VPN guide — has partnered with non-profit organization Internews to strengthen digital safety for journalists, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders.
State-sponsored surveillance, censorship, and cyberattacks are on the rise, in fact, making the need for secure online communications more crucial than ever for those on the frontlines. This collaboration aims to distribute vital privacy-protecting technologies to at-risk communities operating in the world's most dangerous and restrictive environments.
According to Internews' announcement, the partnership will help those facing intense information manipulation and harassment to maintain access to trustworthy information and communicate securely without fear of pervasive monitoring.
Article continues belowThis isn't the first time the two organizations have worked together; Nord Security (NordVPN's parent company) previously equipped local partners in Sudan and Afghanistan with tools to minimize surveillance risks and bypass censorship.
Now, the new initiative expands on that foundation by directly integrating Nord’s secure tools and "Changemakers" training slide decks into Internews' global digital safety programming.

Why journalists need a VPN more than ever
Operating in restrictive contexts shaped by conflict and censorship means that secure communication is no longer a luxury for journalists; it’s an absolute necessity for survival.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts internet traffic and masks the user's IP address, making it harder for hostile regimes or bad actors to track their physical location or monitor their online activities.
NordVPN brings significant technical muscle to this cause. The provider boasts servers in 178 locations across 129 countries, alongside specialist privacy features like Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, and its signature Threat Protection Pro, which actively blocks trackers, malicious websites, and malware-laced downloads.
This move follows a similar path set by its sister brand, Surfshark, which also recently partnered with Internews to provide at-risk individuals with free VPN access.
To encourage broader public engagement with digital safety, Internews and NordVPN have also launched a joint donation campaign. The first 100 individuals who donate £35 to the non-profit will receive a 6-month NordVPN subscription as an incentive.
Furthermore, the two organizations will share the stage at the upcoming RightsCon 2026 event to highlight the importance of responsible technology in protecting vulnerable communities.
