I'm taking every moment I can to decompress from the whirlwind that was the Virgin River season 7 finale.
No spoilers here (check out our ending explained piece for that), but we've swapped the five epic cliffhangers from season 6 for three brand-new problems.

"We didn't know when we finished season 7," Matheson tells me about the season 8 renewal. "Netflix has options for more seasons from us, but I think it took a couple of months after we finished shooting in early December or January [2025] when we heard that we were going to do another season.
"It's always exciting when they share that news with us, but they're always tell us not to give anything away. They've got all it all figured out with ratings and things, and they know their audience — they want to hold it back and not give the audience too much and too soon."
Tell me about it. It always feels as though a million years pass while we're being drip-fed new season content, but with such an early renewal this time around, I hoped the schedule would be more timely.
"We've just had little rough discussions about season 8, so we know vaguely what's going to happen, but mostly only with our characters," he continues. "I mean, they don't discuss in detail about what's going to happen to everybody. You just have to wait and see until you get a script.
"It's always exciting when we sit down at read-throughs with the cast, learning what everybody's come up with... the feelings and the emotions come into play. It's then you really get a hold of it being is real, this is what's going to happen."
Unless Matheson is the most convincing liar I've ever met, we're going to be waiting a good while before Netflix gives us anything more to work with.
