If you like a bit of darkness in your romantic dramas, Hulu has just the films for you – from stone-cold classics to modern blockbusters, November 2025's line-up (see the full list of 83 new movies below) includes plenty of must-watch movies where romance thrives against pretty tough odds.
It's fair to say that the three movies I'm recommending here are a rather eclectic selection. One of them is about a country rock star battling demons who meets Lady Gaga; another features both nuns and Nazis; and the third is one of the best and much-loved movies of the 1980s.
A Star is Born
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are brilliant in this tale of a hard-drinking musician who falls for his protegé Ally, a talented songwriter who he meets as his own life is going badly off the rails. Can Cooper help Ally make it big? Do things get intense and dramatic? Does the story go to some really dark places? Yes! Yes! And yes!
Empire magazine was one of many to give the film the full five stars. It is "a remarkably assured directorial debut from Bradley Cooper who turns in a career-defining performance opposite a promising Lady Gaga. A remake that captures the tone and spirit of prior films, A Star Is Born still blazes its own heartfelt, authentic path." And it's got a great soundtrack too.
The Sound of Music
This 1965 movie has many parents: it is based on the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, which in turn was based on a German film that fictionalized the real-life memoir of Maria von Trapp. Maria, played so memorably here by Julie Andrews, was a free-spirited young woman hired to nanny the many children of widowed naval officer Georg von Trapp and who won the hearts not only of the children, but of their father too.
It's such a part of popular culture that it's sometimes hard to remember that there's more than the memes of twirling around on a mountaintop here: there's a real darkness beneath the sugary songs because the events in the movie take place as the Nazis are rising to power. The National Archives have a fascinating article telling the story of the real Von Trapp family, who fled the country after the Nazi annexation of Austria and applied for citizenship in the US. That darkness makes its joy all the stronger.
As the Guardian's Guy Lodge wrote in a 2025 retrospective, "it’s never become a guilty pleasure: there’s too much earnest rapture in the film for that, too much honest pleasure, too much dizzily twirling joy. Film anniversaries often prompt reflections on the shortness of time, but in this case, I marvel that The Sound of Music is only 60: it’s hard to believe that cinema lived and thrived as long as it did without the film’s most enduring images, inspiring fantasy and mockery in equal measure, as elemental and immovable as the Alps themselves."
The Princess Bride
You can divide people into two groups based on their reaction to this quote: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"
If the person reacts with bafflement to this quote from a hot-headed Spanish swordsman, they need to watch The Princess Bride immediately. And if the person reacts by finishing the quote with you and cackling, they need to re-watch The Princess Bride immediately. It's one of the best and best-loved movies of the 1980s, an epic romantic adventure that still thrills today and the kind of film you talk about when you want to tell people that 'They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To'.
"After 30 years, the wit, fun, charm and idealism are fresher than ever," The Guardian said on its thirtieth anniversary. It's exciting. It's funny. And it's enormously entertaining. "It’s a movie that manages to be both a pastiche and a fervently real love story. The Princess Bride is an organically grown comedy romance from an analogue age: different from the genetically modified, digital creations that came along later."
