Sony just dropped a first look-trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further — but I’m worried it’s spoiled the sequel’s best scares

  • Insidious: Out of the Further has a terrifying new trailer
  • The movie will be released in theaters from August 21
  • Many of the movie's scary moments have already been shown in the trailer

Insidious: Out of the Further is one of the new movies arriving in theaters this summer, and it now has a trailer, which was first shown at CinemaCon.

The plot of the new movie centers on a young woman who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe, and can also bring what lives there back to the real world. Which is just a recipe for disaster, isn't it?

Those attending the convention were greeted with a jump scare-heavy trailer featuring a truly terrifying trip to the dentist. The franchise is well known for its scares, and this trailer doesn't pull any punches ahead of its release on August 21.

Opinion: Horror trailers need to stop spoiling their best scares

Insidious: Out of the Further has potential, but I can't help feeling frustrated by the first-look trailer. With three or four big scary moments happening in a short trailer, I'm now ready for them when I go and see the movie in the theater. Which, honestly, really ruins the surprise element.

Some of my favorite horror trailers of recent years have taken a more subtle approach, and it really paid off. Recently, Weapons director Zach Cregger spoke to me about the movie's viral marketing and how it leaned into the mystery, without spoiling any scares.

I felt a similar disappointment with the first Smile trailer for Paramount+, which ruins a major scare that I saw coming immediately, as I recognized the setup when I saw the full movie. For many horror fans, the most effective scares are the ones that completely blindside us.

Of course, Insidious: Out of the Further's heart-pounding trailer will get everyone talking, and that's the point. But I think they could've got the message across better and let suspense and mystery do the talking instead.

They've done that before, especially when the concept was so new to us, like the red demon scare in the first Insidious movie, which I remember jumping a mile at.

Perhaps they're just riding on the Insidious brand and know that people will go and see it even if the best moments have been ruined months beforehand.

I wish I'd gone in blind, but I'm hopeful that some bigger, unspoiled scares will get me when I see the movie in August.
