  • Google has revealed that Gemini will be coming to Google smart home devices, and an event is scheduled for October 1
  • This is the first time we'll see Gemini for Home's capabilities since it was first mentioned at last month's Made by Google event
  • Not only are we expecting more Gemini integrations, there's a new line of Google smart home devices on the way too

Google has been spending quite a bit of time phasing out Google Assistant across its range of devices so that Gemini can reign. Now it’s finally coming to Google’s line of smart home products – and we already have a launch date.

Google dropped the announcement in a post on X (see below), revealing that Gemini for Home early access will be launching on October 1, and invited users to sign up for updates. According to Engadget, Gemini for Home will be available in both free and paid versions, but this is not yet certain.

Google first unveiled Gemini for Home at the Made by Google event in August, but gave no live demonstrations of its capabilities. In spite of this absence, we’re expecting Google to deliver its first look of Gemini’s smart home functions on October 1.

As per Google’s blog post Gemini for Home is ‘an all-new, more powerful assistant’, and will have the ability to provide the answers to your more complex voice commands. For example, you’ll be able to ask Gemini on your smart speaker or smart display to play a song from a specific decade, or even ask it to set your Nest thermostat to a specific temperature while dimming the lights.

Gemini integration with Google’s smart home devices has been a long time coming, so this is rather exciting news. But Gemini for Home isn’t the only thing we’re expecting to make an appearance.

Hello new smart home devices

As well as the arrival of Gemini for Home, we’re expecting Google to unveil new smart home hardware – details of which were leaked a few weeks back.

One of the main devices we’re expecting is a new Nest camera, which Google teased in its post. Though it has a striking resemblance to the existing Google Nest Cam, it’s likely that it will be a brand new model with Gemini integration as well as other upgraded features. We also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a new Nest Doorbell making an appearance – but it’s the new smart speaker that I’m after.

At last month's Made by Google event we caught a quick snapshot of a mysterious Nest smart speaker, but Google never followed with an explanation, leaving us in the dark with burning questions. Now that we have the upcoming Gemini for Home event on the horizon, a new Google Nest speaker is likely to be one of the launch’s shining stars.

Since Google hasn’t upgraded its line of smart speakers since the Nest Audio in 2021, the company has had ample time to give its new model some TLC on the voice assistant front. Now that Alexa+ has rolled out for users in the US, and Apple’s upgraded Siri is on the way, it’ll be interesting to see what Google will do to get ahead of its competitors.
