Looking for an air purifier that doesn't look clinical and won't break the bank? Head to IKEA. The Swedish homeware titan has a compact $50 purifier that looks like a little Scandi suitcase, and I can see it fitting into pretty much any spot.

There are plenty of compact purifiers on the market, but I've never seen one quite like this. The IKEA UPPÅTVIND has a simple, squared-off design that can stand upright or be laid on its side, and a dove-gray carry handle so it can easily be toted between rooms depending on where it's needed. Despite the white color manages to not feel clinical at all – it almost looks like a speaker.

The functionality looks very solid, too. There's an EPA12 filter that can remove 99.5% of small airborne particles, including PM2.5 particles (small, inhalable particles measuring 0.1-2.5 micrometers in size), pollen and dust. An LED indicator will tell you when it's time to switch out the filter – around every six months – and replacements are available from IKEA. You'll have three fan speeds to choose from, depending on the noise level and purifying efficiency you need.

IKEA recommends the UPPÅTVIND for rooms of 75 sq ft. That's based on five complete air changes per hour, which is on the upper end of what's generally recommended – you could certainly use it in a larger room and have a slightly less efficient purification rate. The CADR (clean air delivery rate) is 18 cu ft/min on the lowest setting, and 55 cu ft/min on the highest.

It's not the most advanced model on the market – many of today's best air purifiers offer an auto mode where the appliance will switch itself on and off, and adjust fan speed, based on the pollutants it detects, as well as providing particle data so you understand more about your air quality. However, if you're happy to keep things simple, this looks like a really solid choice. And for the ultra-affordable price, you're getting excellent value for money, too.
