The Apple Watch is a fantastic wearable that keeps getting better each year. It helps you keep on top of fitness, health, communication, notifications, and much more. Band choice is important in terms of being appropriate for your activities, but also because it can completely change the look of your Apple Watch. We’ve tested countless Apple Watch Bands and rounded up some of our very favorites.

Some Apple Watch bands, like the Sport Loop and other cheap everyday options, make great all-rounders that are inexpensive, comfortable, and versatile. Other bands like the Nike Sport options, or the Apple Watch Ultra 2's Alpine Loop are much more specialized, perfect for sport.

There are also more expensive and fashionable options, notably the Casetify or JUUK Link options for those who dress to impress and don't mind spending a bit of extra cash. Apple’s Sport Band feels like a sturdy silicone but it’s actually fluoroelastomer. Fluoroelastomer is a synthetic rubber that is resistant to chemicals, heat, and high temperatures. It’s actually used in the automotive, aerospace, and chemical processing industries.

But how does it perform on your wrist? Extremely well. I own a lot of quite lovely third-party bands intended to duplicate the Apple Sport Band, but none of them quite do it. Some of them are more floppy and cheap-feeling, or they deteriorate over time.

I have to mention Apple’s elegant pin-and-tuck closure, which keeps the tail out of the way and takes the simple Sport Band to the next level. While I own quite a large Apple Watch Band collection, I end up wearing my comfy Apple Sport Bands most often.

The Alpine Loop is one of Apple’s most unique and special bands. It reminds me a bit of the Apple’s Leather Loop (which Apple no longer sells) looks wise, but it is far more durable and rugged. The Apple Alpine Loop is made from two textile layers of 100% recycled polyester and spandex woven together into a single continuous piece without any stitching. The band fits securely, with high-strength yarns and a corrosion-resistant titanium G-hook that slides easily into the loops.

The Apple Alpine Loop is carbon neutral. This means that it contains at least 43% recycled material, 100% of its manufacturing electricity is provided by clean energy, and at least 50% of them are shipped without airplanes.

You can get this band in just four colors, currently: navy, tan, dark green, and indigo. You can also choose from two different hardware colors to match each of the Apple Watch Ultra colors: black or natural titanium.

Size-wise, this band will only fit the Apple Watch Ultra or the larger Apple Watch, there is no smaller watch option. It also comes in three different lengths. Size small will fit wrists from 130-160mm, medium is for 145-190mm wrists, and large fits 165-210mm.

You must measure carefully to get the right size

As Apple has gotten out of the leather business, the company has experimented with different fabrics in their watch bands. The FineWoven fabric that Apple tried with bands, iPhone cases, and more was … not a hit, to say the least. However, the Braided Solo Loop is fantastic. Like the Alpine Loop, it’s carbon neutral. I recently purchased my first Braided Solo Loop and it just might become my new favorite everyday wear.

The Braided Solo Loop is created by weaving 16,000 recycled polyester yarn filaments around ultrathin silicone threads and laser cutting. The resulting band is soft, durable, stretchy, comfortable, water/sweat resistant, and gorgeous. It stretches just enough to slip on and off easily, and once it’s on you can barely feel it.

Like other Apple bands, the Apple Braided Solo Loop comes in just a handful of colors at any given time. So you won’t want to wait too long if there’s a color (or limited edition pattern like Pride) that you particularly like.

In addition to having both a smaller Apple Watch and a larger Apple Watch size, there are also ten different band lengths. Be sure to follow Apple’s directions exactly when it comes to choosing a size. Get it right and you’ll have a perfect-fitting band for years to come.

Not ideal with dressy clothing

Apple’s Nike Sport Band is very much like the Sport Band. It’s made with the same high-quality fluoroelastomer, has the same neat pin-and-tuck closure, comes in the same sizes, and carries the same price tag. There are a few important differences, however. Most notably, the Nike Sport Band is made with compression-molded perforations for breathability. This is very important for athletes and anyone who spends a lot of time sweating or in water. The holes help keep the band from feeling clammy against your skin and allow it to cool faster.

Another important difference is that each of the Nike Sport Bands has colorful flakes in a randomized pattern, so no two bands are exactly alike. The main part of the band is composed of at least 30% recycled fluoroelastomer and the flakes are at least 66% recycled fluoroelastomer.

The confetti look these flakes achieve is both eye-catching and fun, though perhaps not ideal for your dressier occasions. The color range goes from neutral to neon. Again, Apple doesn’t keep its colors around forever, so pick up the one you like when you see it available.

Trypophobia is a fear or aversion to clusters of holes. For that reason, I wouldn’t purchase this as a surprise gift for someone. But if you like the look of this band, you can be assured that the quality will meet or exceed your expectations.

5. NOMAD Modern Band

Classic, high-quality leather

-
Limited color range

I’ve tested many NOMAD products over the years, and their leather goods are simply the top of the line. NOMAD’s Horween leather is vegetable-tanned in one of America’s oldest tanneries, located in Chicago, IL. The leather is minimally treated, so it retains some natural characteristics of the hide, giving it a unique personality. The leather band will develop a warm patina over time, meaning that it darkens, particularly around the edges. If you don’t like that patina, leather isn’t for you.

There are only two leather colors for this particular band: black and brown. NOMAD uses stainless steel for its lugs and buckle, and you can choose either black or silver hardware.

If this band looks appealing but you want something slightly different, I encourage you to check out NOMAD’s other leather band offerings. I also happen to love their stainless steel link bands for Apple Watch, which are absolutely worth checking out as well.

Difficult to add and remove links

JUUK makes some really cool and unusual metal Apple Watch bands. JUUK takes the classic watch look and adds just a little modern twist. The Ligero is constructed of high-quality aluminum links and a stainless steel butterfly clasp. The beveled edges on either side of each link give the band a unique elegance.

Most metal bands on the market are stainless steel, but the JUUK Ligero is hard anodized 6000 series aluminum. This is the same aluminum that is used in the aircraft, automotive, and boating industries. It’s strong but extremely lightweight.

JUUK takes pride in over-engineering its bands, with two different link sizes in the band to give you more customized fit options. JUUK designed its own concave capsa pins that hold the links together. The band comes with a proprietary adjustment tool to add and remove links. You can do the adjustment yourself, but it’s not easy. You might consider taking it to a jeweler to do the adjustment for you.

The JUUK Ligero comes in a light silver and dark gray color, as well as a pale blue and lavender on JUUK’s website. But the rainbow color really stands apart from the Apple Watch band crowd. I wear my rainbow-colored JUUK Ligero out whenever I’m in the mood to receive some compliments. Whichever color you choose, your Apple Watch will look amazing with a JUUK Ligero band.

7. CASETiFY Chain Bracelet Watch Band

Is it an Apple Watch or jewelry?

Specifications

Material: 36L stainless steel
Sizes: Adjustable
Compatibility: All Apple Watch sizes

Jewelry-like style

Looks and feels like a bracelet

Loose fit can disrupt wrist contact

If you want your Apple Watch to look more like a beautiful bracelet than a fitness wearable, consider CASETiFY’s Chain Bracelet Watch Band. It comes in both Apple Watch sizes and four different color options: gold, rose gold, silver, and black. The links are sturdy and solid, yet give the watch a more delicate and airy look. Adjusting for size couldn’t be easier: just remove as many links as you want, by hand.

It’s as simple as opening and closing a clasp. The only issue is that since the links are fairly large, you may find yourself in between sizes, meaning you have to choose between uncomfortably tight or the band sliding up and down and occasionally losing contact with your skin.

I find this premium stainless steel band extremely comfortable to wear, even while sleeping. I work out in it, I swim in it, and of course, I wear it for dressy occasions. It’s just so pretty. I chose a color that is not an exact match to my current Apple Watch and it still looks great.

I’ve actually tested a number of CASETiFY bands over the years. This is probably my favorite, but this is a brand worth checking out if you want something different. Their faux leather bands come in a dizzying array of colors and artists’ patterns, plus you can even upload your own designs or photos.

FAQs

Best Apple Watch bands for women vs men: is there a difference?

In short, the answer is no. There are no differences between Apple Watch bands for women vs Apple Watch bands for men. Apple's bands are all entirely unisex in their design. As such, you should simply pick the band most appropriate for your needs, be it sport, the everyday, or something more formal.

The only area where bands differ is in their sizing, and this corresponds to the size of Apple Watch case you have. Most bands will have a couple of size options, which you can pick based on the size of your wrist.

What materials are the best Apple Watch bands made of?

The best Apple Watch bands are made from a range of materials. The one that's right for you depends on your preferences and what you'll use the band for.

For example, silicone options are the best for working out. Silicone is usually easy to clean and won't absorb moisture, making it sweatproof.

Nylon is a good option for a comfortable band, especially if you look for an Apple Watch strap made from super soft nylon. Nylon bands are some of the ones with the best pattern and color options, as well as the popular woven fabric look. Apple's own nylon Sport loop includes recycled material and is considered entirely carbon neutral, at least when paired with any aluminium Watch Series 9 and SE models.

Metal bands are ideal if you want your smartwatch to look a little classier, formal or just like a regular watch. Some metal Apple Watch bands have a bracelet-style design. Others have a buckle or clasp. If you're considering a metal band, you'll want to ensure it's secure, as it might be heavier than other options you're used to.

Like metal bands, leather bands can also add style points to your Apple Watch and tend to look more formal. We usually recommend a leather option if anyone is wary about transitioning from a regular watch to a smartwatch. Choose a quality leather band, and it can be the most comfortable choice. There are some good vegan leather options these days too.

How to choose the best Apple Watch band

When choosing an Apple Watch band the first two things you should consider are your budget and what you plan to do while wearing the Apple Watch - most notably whether you plan to exercise in it, whether you plan to swim in it, and whether you'll wear it somewhere smart.

With all those considerations in mind, you can start to round down the best strap for you. Leather straps for example are no good for swimming, and if you plan to extensively exercise then a dedicated workout band might be the best choice.

If exercise isn't on the agenda then you can look to something classier, like a metal or leather band – and if money is no object then designer bands could be worth considering.

How we test Apple Watch bands

Fit and comfort are first and foremost, so we spend a lot of time wearing the bands to ensure they’re comfortable and secure. If the band is too tight, it won’t be comfortable to wear. If it’s too loose, the Apple Watch won’t perform properly. Your Apple Watch must maintain continuous contact with your skin in order to monitor your sleep, exercise, health, and more.

Additionally, if a password-protected (which it should be) Apple Watch loses contact with your skin, it will auto-lock and won’t be of much use. Correct fit is paramount. All of the watches on our list offer excellent fit for most people. If you have a very large or very small wrist, you’ll want to make sure to select a band that has the size range you’ll need. Each of the bands above are comfortable to wear as well.

Another important element of Apple Watch wear is how it performs during exercise. We’ve noted above which bands are appropriate for exercise. Obviously, the leather bands should not be worn to the gym or in the pool or any place they might get very wet. Metal bands are fine in most situations, except for perhaps extreme exercise or outdoor adventures where they might get scratched.

Another consideration for testing is sleep. Since many of us use our Apple Watches as sleep monitors, our bands must fit well and be ultra-comfortable so as to not interfere with sleep. All of our picks above are sleep-approved.
