The Coolpix S02 does a pretty decent job at preserving accurate colour and detail in the sky when presented with a dark foreground. Overall, colours are rich and vibrant.
The lack of an ISO or White Balance control makes shooting in low light quite difficult with the S02.
The S02's High Contrast Monochrome option in the Special Effects menu does what it says on the tin; however, we wish it - as well as some of the other Effects - were a little stronger.
The Coolpix S02's Low Key option in the Special Effects menu is great for shooting subtle scenes. We found it particularly useful for portraiture in toning down the background yet emphasising the subject just enough.
One of our favourite modes was the Mirror Effect, which replicates your subject or scene, joining them at the middle. It was fun to think about composing pictures in this way.
Under the mixed light of a forest canopy the Coolpix S02 performed reasonably well in recording accurate tones.
