In the end, the speculation that the Tatas would launch the long range version of its bestseller Tata Nexon EV proved to be unfounded. Instead, the Indian automobile giant unveiled the new Tata Curvv concept – an electric SUV coupe. While the covers are off the stylish EV, the vehicle would take nearly two years to make it to the market (2024).

The name Curvv had been doing the rounds of the media for some time, but most didn't know that it would be showcased today.

Concept Curvv will first enter the market as an extension of the company’s EV portfolio which will subsequently be followed by its Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) counterpart, Tata Motors said.

Curvv EV will be placed above the Nexon making it the first mid-size electric SUV in Tata Motors’ EV portfolio. Curvv will likely be based on Tata Motors’ modular ALFA platform. The new EV will have a company-claimed range of 500km. It will be pitted against the likes of the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric in the Indian market.

Toughness of an SUV and elegance of a coupe

The CURVV concept introduces a modern SUV typology, as it merges --- in the words of the company --- "the toughness and durability of an SUV with an elegant and sporty silhouette of a Coupe".

The exterior design has a raised ride height, tough cladding and dynamic proportions. The vehicle sports a slim upper DRL and a triangular headlamp design. The signature LED lamps that surround the rear screen, along with the horizontal light bar, reinforce the width and a high-tech feel of the concept.

The front lower bumper has a grooved pattern, a theme that is repeated at the rear and on the wheels’ aero blade design, giving the vehicle a connected and holistic feel. The Day Light Opening has a typical SUV coupe like graphic which flows into the C-pillar and deck lid.

There is a strong aerodynamic theme running through the SUV. "The floating bonnet allows air flow to channel underneath, exiting through triangular features further up the surface. The floating C-pillar continues the aerodynamic theme, with airflow across the body side and underneath the pillar, exiting at the side of the rear screen. The wheels also have aero blade inserts to close up the open area and allow better airflow across the surfaces, and diamond turned finished surfaces give a high graphical contrast," the company said. The interior looks spacious and is said to integrate the state-of-the-art onboard technologies and HMI.

Tata Motors noted that the new Generation 2 EV architecture will be advanced, flexible and capable of offering multi-powertrain options. Tata Motors has also confirmed that the new Currv EV will be a connected car. The company is gearing up to introduce two other EVs later this month.
