Samsung’s Galaxy S23 lineup is expected to launch early next year only, however, early reports coming out of South Korea hint that the smartphone maker might surprise all of us.

According to a report from Business Korea, Samsung might prefer MediaTek SoC for the upcoming Galaxy S23 lineup as well as the Galaxy S22 FE smartphone.

The report suggests that both Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 have failed to live up to the expectations of a flagship chipset hence forcing Samsung to look for alternative options. The company is reportedly planning to use the MediaTek chipset for the devices that will be sold in the Asian markets for both – Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S22 FE.

Though it might be early days, however, if the report is indeed true then it would be for the first time ever that Samsung might use a MediaTek SoC for its flagship devices. In the past, the Korean smartphone maker has used chipsets from the Taiwanese brand but only for its mid-range and budget smartphones.

To recall, MediaTek has been doing exceptionally well in the recent past – especially after the arrival of Dimensity SoC. The company has not only gained market share but has also been able to come up with SoCs that could offer similar performance compared to its closest rival Qualcomm’s flagship SoC.

For the records, Qualcomm’s recent flagship SoC – Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC was manufactured by Samsung Foundry and is powering devices like the Galaxy S22 series, Xiaomi 12 series, and OnePlus 10 Pro, Moto Edge 30 Pro etc.

However, the chipset doesn’t register a massive upgrade over its predecessor hence it’s been reported that Qualcomm is looking to collaborate with TSMC for the next-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset. Apart from Qualcomm, MediaTek along with Apple and Samsung are among the top few mobile chipset makers.

Worrying signs for Exynos?

Exynos chipsets are primarily used in Samsung phones and the flagship SoC is rarely seen in other brands. Samsung has always used both Qualcomm and Exynos SoCs for its flagship, and this news hints that the Exynos chipsets are fast losing ground within the organization.

The possibility of the company swapping Snapdragon SoC with a Dimensity SoC in its next device seems unlikely as the end customers have shown a preference for the Qualcomm variant of Samsung phones compared to the ones powered by Exynos SoCs.

The fact that the Dimensity 9000 has been receiving rave reviews might have made the decision slightly easier, however, devices powered by the chipset are still limited to China. Though things might change soon.
