Freeview HD may be all the rage, but the TX-L32D28BP adds Freesat HD, too, along with its broadband entertainment portal, Viera Cast. The latter now includes widgets for Eurosport and Daily Motion news clips, though YouTube remains the highlight. Skype, meanwhile, is advertised as 'coming soon'.

Elsewhere the TX-L32D28BP has a haul of ins and outs to challenge any top-spec screen. A side panel includes slots for HDMI, USB and SD cards, while the rear adds three more HDMI, another USB, and a host of other audio and video ins and outs that excludes only S-video.

That may sound like one USB too many, but with an optional Wi-Fi dongle and a webcam – no less – for Skype video calls on the horizon, there may not be much room for memory sticks.

Ethernet also stars, which powers the TX-L32D28BP's DLNA networking as well as its Viera Cast portal, while the TX-L32D28BP is also a recorder. TV manufacturers have long kept clear of built-in hard drive because of worries about faults and returns, so it's nice to see that the TX-L32D28BP can record to an external hard drive of up to 2TB in size.
