Apart from the processor, the Redmi Note 5 leaks also suggest that Xiaomi may be bringing dual camera setup to the Redmi line-up for the first time. While the new leaks are all hinting at a very good upgrade from the Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi may still not increase the price of the Redmi Note 5.

Snapdragon 660 in the budget segment for the first time

One of the major talking points of the new Redmi Note 5 specs leak is the processor. According to the latest set of leaks, the Redmi Note 5 is expected to be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, bringing upper mid-range specs to the budget segment for the first time.

These leaks come as a surprise, given Xiaomi’s penchant to use Snapdragon 625 chipset in several of its phones. As a successor, Xiaomi was expected to use Snapdragon 630 chipset in the Redmi Note 5. However, if these leaks are to be believed, the Redmi Note 5 could end up as the true successor to the popular Redmi Note 3. The leaked specs sheet was first spotted on Chinese social networking site Weibo, with the reference to Snapdragon 660.

The Snapdragon variant of the Redmi Note 3 featured the powerful Snapdragon 650 processor. Snapdragon 660 gains in terms of power and efficiency when compared to the Snapdragon 65x series. It would be fitting for the Redmi Note 5 to feature Snapdragon 660.

It was rumoured that the Redmi Note 5 will be one of the few mid-rangers that’ll boast of 18:9 aspect ratio, and the freshly leaked renders put some more light on how the device may look. The rear looks very identical to the Redmi Note 5 with slight curve on the sides, the plastic chin and forehead but there’s also a dual camera setup this time around. It is said that the phone will have a 16MP+5MP camera setup on the rear.

On the front, the Redmi Note 5 could come with an upgraded 12MP camera.

Rounding up the specs sheet, the Redmi Note 5 is reported to come in 3GB and 4GB memory variants, with 32GB and 64GB of storage respectively. A 5.5-inch full HD display, fingerprint sensor, 4,000mAh battery, dual SIM with 4G VoLTE support are other remaining aspects that have been revealed.

Latest leaks tell a different story

The newly leaked pictures on TENNA do not confirm that the phones shown are Redmi Note 5, but if we align it with what we have seen in past, the design and specifications are highly relatable to the existing Redmi Note phones.

According to the leak, the appeared devices MET7 and MEE7 with minimal bezels around the display and 18:9 aspect ratio. The leaked images hint at a back panel that looks more like the Redmi Note 3 with a rounded sides and a circular camera lens and a fingerprint sensor right below it.

The main difference in the appearance resides on the front where the phone where it has a 5.99-inch display with 18:9 aspect ratio with curved corners. The LCD panel has a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels.

The TENNA listing further shows that the smartphone will run a 2.0GHz octa-core processor which we expect to be either Snapdragon 660 or the Snapdragon 636. Both the phones will run Android 7.1.2 Nougat with MIUI 9 on top. On the camera front, both the phones will have a 12-megapixel rear and a 5-megapixel front camera.

The phones will come in three RAM and storage variants of 3GB/16GB, 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB. The prices of the three variants have also been revealed as CNY 999 (approx Rs 9,790), CNY 1,299 (approx Rs 12,700) and CNY 1,699 (approx Rs 16,600) respectively.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 listed on Oppomart

The latest spotting of Redmi Note 5 comes from a listing on Oppomart. The website has a page for the upcoming smartphone with a picture of the purported Note 5. The specifications from the listing say that the successor to the Redmi Note 4 will feature a 5.99-inch, 2160x1080 pixel display that will have an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Redmi Note 5 will come with narrow bezels on sides which is in line with the current trend of smartphones.

Furthermore, Oppomart says that the smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which interestingly also powers the current generation of Redmi Note. This is unlikely as the latest, Snapdragon 630 processor has been announced by Qualcomm and Redmi Note 5 should come with it as well.

Additionally, we also see that the listing states that the Redmi Note 5 will come with a 12-megapixel rear and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. It will be available in RAM and memory variants of 3GB/4GB and 32GB/64GB. Oppomart also reveals that it will be powered by a 4,000 mAh battery which supports quick charge.

The specifications are in-line with the oppomart listing where some features are unlikely to show up on the actual smartphone. This might be a prototype but it establishes one fact, that Xiaomi is gunning to launch a minimal bezel mid-range smartphone soon.
