Samsung Galaxy S8 tipped to be bigger than the Note 7

Although it sounds unlikely

If you’re among the many who were hoping to get a Samsung Galaxy Note 7, you might not have to wait another year for Samsung to cater to you, as a new rumor suggests the Samsung Galaxy S8 could come in 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch screen sizes.

The Galaxy S7 display by comparison is merely 5.1 inches, with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge coming in at 5.5 inches, so this would be a huge jump. The larger rumored variant even exceeds the screen size of the Note 7, which had a 5.7-inch display.

It’s a decision that almost sounds too crazy to be true. It’s clearly a move aimed to win back Note fans, but could alienate fans of the standard S range – which is still Samsung’s most successful range.

But there is some logic to it. According to The Investor, which got the story from South Korean news outlet The Bell, Samsung would achieve these screen sizes without actually making the bodies of the phones any bigger than the S7 and S7 Edge, by removing the home button and accompanying bezel.

The potential removal of the home button is something we’ve heard before – along with the possibility that Samsung would build the fingerprint scanner into the display itself, so this ties in with existing rumors.

Unlikely, but not impossible

If Samsung really can increase the screen sizes that much without increasing the body sizes of the phones, then there’s a chance the Galaxy S8 could fully appeal to both phablet fans and those who want a normal flagship phone.

But we’re still sceptical. It’s not clear where the information came from and it’s at odds with earlier rumors, which suggest the screen sizes will stay the same as the S7 range. Samsung would also have to work hard to convince potential buyers put off by the size.

Today’s report goes on to say that both phones will have curved screens – which we’ve heard before - and that the 6.2-inch model could be called the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus.

But again, with most other screen size rumors pointing in a different direction we’d take this rumor with a huge pinch of salt.
