Turn your iPod touch into a free phone with Truphone

<>

Want to make free phone calls to your fellow iPod touch owners? Now you can, courtesy of the recently announced Truphone for iPod touch.

"Make free calls to other iPod touch owners: no SIM, no contract, no money," reads Truphone's marketing blurb.

"Described by Apple itself as the 'funnest' iPod ever, the iPod touch may now be the 'useful-est' too thanks to FREE software that effectively turns one into a mobile phone."

We like 'free'

Once the software has been installed, and with the addition of microphone adaptor (with Truphone's own mic to be made be available very soon) an iPod touch owner can make free worldwide calls to other iPod touch owners, to customers of Truphone's VoIP service and to users of Google Talk.

Truphone also promises us that the following features are coming soon:

  • Making and receiving calls to and from landlines (PSTN) at low cost (simply set yourself up with a Truphone account)
  • Instant messaging to Skype and MSN (free)
  • Calling to Skype users (free)
  • Calling to MSN users (free)
  • Check and set facilities for Twitter (free)
  • Check and set facilities for Facebook (free)

Check Truphone out for yourself now over at Apple's App Store - it works in exactly the same way as any other iPod touch application.

3. It relies on Wi-Fi doesn't it? So technically it is flawed as a phone. How many phonecalls have you made in your life that have been near a wi-fi router? Probably somewhere close to zero.

1. Free Phone? Sounds like the FAILED Rabbit network idea to me. I can just see it now thousands of teenagers staying close to their WiFi routers to avoid call charges!
