UPDATE: Check out our Hands on: iPhone 4S review.

Apple's invite said 'let's talk about iPhone' and that's exactly what we'll be doing with our live coverage from the iPhone conference in the Covent Garden Apple store.

19:37: It's over. Thanks for your attention and keep checking TechRadar for all the news updates into the evening.

19:36: Cook is back on the stage. Big moment for him. "Only Apple could make such amazing software hardware and services and bring them together in such an integrated package."

19:35: White confirmed: Sizes and US prices: 16 GB, $199, 32 GB $299 and 64 GB $399. iPhone 4 repriced to $99 (with a contract). iPhone 4S UK release date 14 October, along with US, Canada Australia, France Germany and Japan.

19:33: So - it's an iPhone 4 with a slightly better camera, better processor and graphics, Siri and iOS 5. Is that enough to get you to upgrade? Tell @techradar on Twitter.

19:30: It's a 4S video! There's a white iPhone 4S shown in the video. Will that be available from launch?

19:28: It's beta at the start - will support English, Spanish and French.

19:28: "Siri does dictation", says Schiller as he returns to the stage. "It's conversational and understands context, amazing out of the box but learns your voice and gets better."

19:27:"Who are you?" "I am a humble personal assistant." Cute

19:25: Is Cook gonna do a one more thing?

19:24: It's not perfect, says Apple, but there is a guide so you can see what you can (and can't) ask Siri.

19:21: Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha are partnered in. This time next year we'll all be sat jabbering at our devices. Noisy.

19:21: There's more. Reminders app is brought up again - and it works beautifully. That combined with the geo-fencing is a powerful, powerful tool.

19:20: Siri read your texts aloud. Sneak! You can ask about your calendar before responding to a lunch question. It's nifty. It didn't read out the reply - just put it on screen, so you couldn't check it. It's a minor fail to be honest.

19:18: The voice is still full on freaky, thought. Integration with clocks, Yelp, maps etc - all working well.

19:17: Okay - even with our cynical iPhone 5 missing hats on, this is pretty darn cool. Ask it "will I look mad talking to my phone?"

19:16: Passed the weather question test and brought up the forecast. Second test works too. "Do I need a raincoat" is met with "It sure looks like rain today."

19:15: iPhone 4S has Siri technology. You can talk to your phone, We're being given a demo, Schiller says it's in beta - excuses!

19:14: They are going to announce Siri. Talking about history of voice commands.

19:13: "It's the best iPhone yet."Obv.

19:12: iPhone 4S - entirely new on the inside, says Schiller, again.

19:11: Next. AirPlay. We're keen on AirPlay - so we like this bit.

19:10: Yep. It's video.

19:09: 1080p video, real time video stabilisation, temporal noise reduction. They are gonna show us video aren't they?

19:08: We're being shown some photos from the 4S. There's no iPhone 5 is there? I bet the 4S can get a great photo of our disappointed face.

19:08: Again with the rival phones. This time it's a comparison of picture speeds.

19:07: Apple designed image signal processor that Schiller nearly forgot to tell us about - that's face detection, white balance etc etc.

19:05:iPhone 4S story is now up on TechRadar

19:04: Camera system being discussed; Apple have set sight on digital compact cameras. 8MP sensor, better sensor and a hybrid IR filter for more accurate and uniform colours. Five element lenses, f2,4 aperture.

19:03: iPhone 4s is a world phone

19:03: There's two antennas which can be switched between. This makes better(!) call quality and 2x data download speed. Apple points at comparison with 4G phones by putting up rivals on screen: then says they don't want to argue about it.

19:01: Battery life is 'industry leading'. 8 hours of 3G talk time, 40 hours of listening to music.

18:59: A giant falls on screen. A metaphor? Probably no.

18:57: So a better graphics chip means, erm, better graphics. It feels like a movie, apparently. Like Wayne Rooney's face is accurate in Fifa 12 perhaps.

18:56: So, the question is: is the iPhone 5 still to come or is this it?

18:55: Interesting that Schiller and not Cook has announced the iPhone 4S. We now have Epic Games on stage to talk about Unreal tech on the phone.

18:54: Schiller: nothing has come close to iPhone 4. How do you follow up? It's the iPhone 4S. It's all new inside. The A5 processor is first thing announced. Dual-core.

18:53: iPhone!!!

18:52: White iPod touch has a release date of 12 October.

18:50: iPod Touch: The most popular iPod, says Schiller. Big number slide about it being #1 game platform. It will have iOS 5 obviously - that's the key difference. iMessage is bigged up, it's like a WiFi phone! Sorta. iCloud will also have a major impact. They are releasing a WHITE iPod Touch! Oooooh.

18:48: Updates to iPad Nano. Bigger icons. Better fitness experience - out of the box exercise app. New clock faces (for people who wear it as a watch). Yes, there's a Mickey Mouse option.

18:47: Why do people applaud videos? Anyway, Phil Schiller takes to the stage - he's really pleased to talk to us about the iPod.

18:45: An iCloud video being shown. What a wonderful world we live in...

18:43: Music match means you don't need to upload (most of) your music. It's very cool, especially if you have a new device and can't bear to go go through the whole upload process. Most listened to songs will be cached and upped in quality. $24.99 a year.

18:43: Unlimited storage for bought stuff, 5GB for mail and docs

18:42:You can locate your devices with 'Find my iPhone' and a new App called 'Find my friends'. It's a slightly creepy opt-in geolocation app. Stalker much? There is temporary sharing options, and simple turn-off options. You can stop your kids from turning it on or off.

18:40: Short version: All of your stuff will sync and be stored online.

18:36: After the excitement of an actual iOS 5 release date, we go onto iCloud. iTunes in the cloud and Photostream are discussed. Documents in the cloud: new docs are saved and stored in iCloud.

18:35: iOS 5 available on 12 October

18:33: Reader functionality is discussed along with tab browsing (for the iPad) on Safari. Mail formatting will get better. This is just a recap by the way - we already know all of this from the last event.

18:32:Gamecentre is a "huge hit" I think he said hit anyway. I've heard it called something similar...

18:31: Now the camera changes; we've not had a big number, pie chart or graph slide for ages. We kinda miss those simple times of five minutes ago.

18:31: Newstand is shown off. It's a nice way of buying mags and papers and displaying them

18:30: Reminders is very cool though. The term Geo-fence has just been used. Win. Twitter integration also a major (and welcome) arrival.

18:30: Here's the bit they copied from Android. Here's the bit that's like BBM...

18:27: iOS 5 at last. We get a recap of the features. You can check out our iOS 5 guide

18:25:Greetings card app being shown. It's a bit US-centric; don't they care the rest of the world is watching :)

18:23: App store is #1, predictably, third slide type: a big number on a slide. It's death by (not)powerpoint

18:22: iOS now. It's popular says another pie chart slide. That's about 57 pie charts and graphs so far. *sigh*

18:21: Three quarters of tablets sold are iPads, says Cook. Quarter of a billion unit sales of iOS devices.

18:20: This is a lot like a financial briefing so far Tim.

18:18: iPads are replacing paper everywhere says Cook. Planes, Universities, Hospitals etc etc

18:17: "More coming up on iPhone," jokes Cook. We move onto iPad

18:17: 5 per cent of total handset market. Apple looking to total market and not just smartphones.

18:16: iPhone at last. Fastest selling phone in the world. Cook talks about businesses adopting iPhones. Tops a user happiness poll. Nokia gets 21 per cent satisfaction. Ouch.

18:15: iTunes being talked up. #1 music store in the world and 16 billion songs downloaded. "It's mind-boggling"

18:14: More than 300m iPods sold. 45 million sold from July 2010 and July 2011. Half to people buying first iPod.

18:13: Next up is music. Only 10 years ago that iPod launched and "revolutionised whole music industry"

18:13: Macs selling one out of every four PCs sold in a store.

18:12: "New MacBook Air is loved by the customers," says Cook. "Competitors trying to copy but they are finding it tough". Macs are best selling desktop and laptop in the US. Outselling PCs in year on year growth. What is it they say about stats?

18:08: It's an update on each of Apple's core areas. Mac's - doing well. Who'da thunk...etc etc

18:07: Apple Stores are popular suggests Apple's video. Who'da thunk it?

18:02: Cook says Apple will remind us of the innovation of company. It's all about the Apple Stores to begin with

18:00: Tim Cook takes to the stage. That was predictable

17:53: Well we have the best seat in the house at the UK Apple iPhone press conference. It was a media throng, but we survived unscathed. Stay with us and hit F5 for updates as we write them. Conference should start at 6pm UK time.

Here's what we're expecting to see tonight...

Since early this year there has been speculation that Apple would launch a new iPhone 5 during the latter half of 2011.

The precedent with previous Apple handsets is that they have been announced in January or June - but nothing happened with iPhone at Apple's June event; the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Nothing, that is, apart from a whole new OS in iOS 5 and a cloud-based infrastructure to untether the whole iPhone ecosystem from the PC - that, of course, is iCloud.

Still, hardware was absent and such was the storm of iPhone 5 rumours before the event that Apple was forced to make it clear that WWDC would be about software.

So now we're on the day of Apple's iPhone press conference, what can we expect from the announcements?

Despite huge numbers of rumours that we're expecting both an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, we believe we'll see one or the other launch. Why? Check out the invite.

Apple invite

The green phone icon has a 1 by it and - we'll stick our neck out here - that means one phone. The reasoning is that the rest of the icons all mean something. Today's date, the PST local time of the press conference and finally the iPhone Maps logo that actually shows the location of Apple's Cupertino HQ where the press conference is taking place.

We're sticking with our original hunch - it'll be iPhone 5 - although the groundswell of information pointing to a rejigged iPhone 4S has been getting stronger each day, and our columnist Gary Marshall reckons we'll get the iPhone 4S, with evolutionary improvements rather than revolutionary ones.

If you're wondering when a new iPhone might launch, check out the latest rumours about the iPhone 5 release date.

What's happening tonight?

It all kicks off at 6pm BST - that's 10am PST - and the main keynote announcement takes place in the Town Hall on Apple's campus. That's a downsizing from previous launches that have taken place at San Francisco's Moscone Center. Why the change? This is the first major launch of the post Steve Jobs era, and it could well be that new CEO Tim Cook would prefer to start off among friends.

Along with the rest of the UK media we'll be present at a UK broadcast of the event taking place at London's Covent Garden Apple Store. This is also lower key than for previous launches when all and sundry have been invited to locations such as BBC Television Centre and we're hearing that fewer press have been invited to both the US and UK events.

Also keep an eye on the TechRadar Twitter account (@techradar) for the event itself and we'll be covering the launch live on the site.

Hopefully we'll be able to get a hands on iPhone 5 review up after the announcement, and we'll be bringing you total coverage of the launch here on TechRadar including our first impressions of any new iPhone as well as the latest news on iOS 5 and iCloud - both of those services could launch any time from tonight to the iPhone 5 release date.

Tomorrow, we'll also be bringing you full analysis on the aftermath of the event, as well as assessing how Tim Cook got on during his first big public test since taking over.
