The iPhone 8 Plus price starts at $799 ( (£799, AU$1,229) for the 64GB model, while the 256GB variant costs $949 (£949, AU$1,479).

iPhone 8 Plus design and display

The new iPhone 8 Plus is one of the first phones from Apple to come with a glass back. Apple claims it's the most durable glass ever in a smartphone, but it didn't reveal what glass protection it uses.

You'll have the choice of silver, space grey or gold when it comes to iPhone 8 Plus colors.

Apart from the glass back, the design language on the iPhone 8 Plus is similar to the iPhone 7 Plus. There's no headphone jack, but we haven't found out yet if the new phone is any thinner.

It's waterproof, like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. There are new stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the phone, and Apple says these have deeper bass, and can go 20% louder too.

For the display, Apple has again gone for a 5.5-inch LCD screen with bezels around the side. It features a Full HD resolution, so you'll get 401 pixels-per-inch.

Below the screen is the familiar Touch ID fingerprint within the home button.

iPhone 8 Plus specs

The new phone runs on the A11 Bionic chipset from Apple. It's a six-core chip that runs 25% faster than the A10 in the iPhone 7 Plus. As usual, Apple hasn't shared how much RAM will be in the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple has also designed its own GPU for the A11 Bionic, which the company says will allow for 30% faster graphics than in the A10. There's also Bluetooth 5 tech built-in that allows for a faster connection and longer range than previous tech.

The iPhone 8 Plus will come with either 64GB or 256GB of storage onboard. The phone will also launch with the brand-new iOS 11 software.

iPhone 8 Plus battery

The iPhone 8 Plus will also support wireless charging, which makes it the first Apple phone to do so. It supports Qi wireless charging, which is the leading open wireless charging standard.

That means lots of restaurant chains and car manufacturers already support this tech, so Apple's new phone will work with most wireless charging pads. It'll also work with third-party chargers from brands like Mophie, Ikea and Belkin.

Apple hasn't confirmed the size of the battery used in the iPhone 8 Plus, but we do know there will be fast charging. You'll still be able to charge the phone with a Lightning cable that plugs into the bottom of the phone.

iPhone 8 Plus camera

The iPhone 8 Plus comes with a dual 12MP rear camera. The wide-angle sensor has an aperture of f/1.8 and the telephoto has an aperture of f/2.8. It works in a very similar way to the iPhone 7 Plus, but there are a few upgrades.

Apple has also confirmed optical image stabilization, but it's uncertain if it'll be used on both sensors. Apple also claims that you'll get a more refined bokeh (background blur) effect with the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple is also introducing a new feature called Portrait Lighting, which uses both sensors and machine learning to map your face within shots to help improve the lighting in the image.

This all happens within Apple's camera UI, and there are a variety of different lighting effects included. Not much else is known about the feature and it'll be in beta at launch, but we'll be sure to dig into this feature for our full review.

Apple also claims the iPhone 8 Plus will provide the best video recording ever in a smartphone, with 4K 60fps video, 1080p 240fps slow-mo and generally faster video frame rates.

There are also new augmented reality (AR) features. Exactly how the tech inside the iPhone 8 Plus works to enable AR is unclear, but Apple showed off features including gaming, a sky map and real-time player stats displayed on the screen at a live baseball game.

On the front of the phone is a 7MP selfie camera that can film in 1080p and has an aperture of f/2.2.
