Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix GH5S is certainly one of the more specialized cameras out there, and it's not going to be for everyone. While it can shoot stills quite happily (although at a pretty limited resolution), this should be seen first and foremost as a video camera – if you want to do both you've got the Lumix GH5 to fill that brief.

While the absence of built-in image stabilization might be a disappointment for some, Panasonic's reasoning makes sense, and that issue aside the breadth of features is incredibly impressive.

If you want to shoot professional-quality footage without remortgaging your house to buy a pro video camera, you won't find a better video-focused camera right now.

Panasonic Lumix GH5

Until the arrival of the GH5S the Lumix GH5 was our pick of the 4K cameras, but the more comprehensive video spec of the GH5S means it's now our top choice. Don't discount the GH5 though; with more pixels and built-in IS, this is a great camera for those looking to shoot a mixture of stills and video.

Sony Alpha A7S II

When we reviewed the A7S II we said it was the best video-shooting stills camera available, and while much has changed in the market we still reckon it’s a compelling option for the videographer. It'll deliver better stills quality than the Lumix GH5S, while it's easier to achieve a shallow depth of field thanks to the larger sensor, but can't quite match the GH5S for video.
