  • Canon teases launch event for September 9 2025 at 2pm BST / 11pm AEST
  • Instagram teaser captioned "Open your world to what's next"
  • Rumored to be Canon EOS C50, a direct rival to the Sony FX3

A new Canon camera is about to land, and the company just dropped a major hint about one of its features.

As we reported last week, Canon is launching something tomorrow – something that looks very much like a compact new Cinema EOS camera primed to take on the Sony FX3. Ahead of the launch (which you’ll be able to watch live on YouTube – scroll down to see the embedded video), the company has published an Instagram video captioned, “Open your world to what’s next. 9.9.25”.

The video shows a side-on silhouette of the new camera, which is interesting, but it’s the choice of words in that caption that excites us even more. The use of “open” seems a clear hint that this camera will support Open Gate video recording – using the whole surface of the image sensor.

Open Gate is prized by filmmakers and content creators because of its support for cropping video into any aspect ratio.

Despite rival Panasonic giving users Open Gate recording with several of its video cameras, such as the Lumix S1 II, the feature hasn’t been available on a Canon camera before, so its inclusion here would be big news.
