Our love affair with the DIR-655 in its many model variations continues with this latest release. It's not the first router to offer 802.11n Draft 2 compliance, but it does add a wealth of new features to the package to set it apart from the competition.

It's disappointing that it doesn't offer 5GHz support - we guess companies are hoping to fleece customers as much as possible with the 2.4GHz kit before releasing the 'twice as fast' 5GHz marketing campaign.

That aside, this model remains one of the fastest wireless routers we've tested, it includes four Gigabit LAN ports and has one of the most polished and easy to use interfaces on the market. It's a shame this is only a Cable modem model, as else we would happily be ripping our existing ADSL modem/router off the wall.

If you can't wait for the fully ratified version of 802.11n to appear then this really is the model to opt for - though the Netgear DG834N with its integrated ADSL2+ modem would make for a reasonable all-in-one alternative.
