Retail analysts are expecting Apple's new iPhone 3GS to sell ten times as many units in its first weekend as the Palm Pre did.

According to estimates in Fortune magazine, Jobs and co will shift between 500,000 and 700,000 of the 7.2Mbps handsets when they arrive in shops this weekend.

Other analysis suggests that Sprint stores in the US sold between 45,000 and 55,000 Palm Pre phones during its launch weekend earlier this month.

Quieter launch

The Apple numbers, while impressive, are a long way behind launch figures for Apple iPhone 3G, which sold a cool million units back in the heady, recession-free summer of 2008.

That could be due to the price for a new model remaining static at $199 in the US, together with some new customers opting for a cut-price iPhone 3G instead.

However, the retail gurus expect the 3GS to soon catch up and surpass its sluggish sibling's sale record, with sales for its first full quarter estimated at 7m units (compared to 4.4m for the iPhone 3G).
