Hands on with the HTC Hero

UPDATE: we've now published our full, in-depth HTC Hero review / T-Mobile G2 Touch review.

We managed to nab the new HTC Hero (or the HTC G2 Touch if you are a T-Mobile customer) at the launch event, to have a look at the new Android interface and improved hardware specs, to see if Google phones can finally match the might of the iPhone 3GS.

The first thing to note about the Hero is the fact it seems to be a lovechild of the G1 and the Magic, HTC's other Android phones. It's a little thicker than the Magic, at 14.3mm depth, but with a larger chassis comes greater hardware.

We're seeing a 3.5mm jack, a 5MP camera, improved touchscreen accuracy and recognition, although no QWERTY keyboard version as we were hoping.

And not only is there a hardware overhaul, but also Android has been sent to Fat Camp and come back miles trimmer and stronger, with the HTC Sense makeover stripping out the features a phone company thinks you should have and instead giving you an 'empty vessel' to customise as you see fit.

1. So, are these major interface changes (not including the obvious carry over from the Windows Mobile skin) going to be entirely unique to HTC Android phones or are they software upgrades that rivals such as the new Samsung i7500 can enjoy?
