PC sales up in US despite economic gloom

Dell is on the up, as is Apple, but Acer isn't likely to be overjoyed by Gartner's latest figures

Gartner has released preliminary shipping and sales figures for the US computing sector that show a 12.3 per cent increase in the number of PCs shipped in the first quarter of 2008 despite the mounting economic gloom.

According to the figures, PC shipments grew from 63,250 in Q1 2007 to 71,057 in Q1 2008, with nearly all of the major manufacturers gaining from the boost in business.
