Google Gemini Live gets its 'biggest update ever' with 5 new upgrades – here's how to try them

Back in August, Google promised some significant updates for Google Gemini Live – the real time, conversational Gemini interface – and those updates are now rolling out on Android and iOS, giving you access to "more adaptive and expressive conversations".

As per the official blog post, this latest update gives you more control over your AI chats and opens up new ways to learn. Gemini Live already felt natural and intuitive – much like talking to an actual person – and that's even more the case now.

"Conversations are about more than just words," Google says. "They’re about the nuance in how we speak – the rise and fall of our voices, the rhythm of our sentences and the tone behind our words." The new updates for Gemini Live should, it claims, "dramatically improve its ability to understand and use key elements of human speech".

Google AI executive Josh Woodward has gone further, saying the new models represent "the biggest update to Gemini Live ever", and posting some of the scenarios where the improvements shine through – including teaching skills, quizzes, and accents.

The five new updates mean Gemini Live should be better at using intonation, rhythm, and pitch. Firstly, you can get it to talk more slowly or more quickly, and if you're talking about something stressful, it might automatically respond in a calmer-than-normal voice.

Storytelling is another area where you can hear this come through: get Gemini Live to tell you the story of the Roman Empire through the eyes of Julius Caesar, and you should find it presented in dramatic audio form, complete with character accents.

Speaking of accents, you can now get Gemini Live to imitate accents – from cowboy to cockney. Google also says Gemini is now better at giving you tailored learning experiences: whether you're trying to improve your knowledge of a foreign language or a classic novel, Gemini Live is able to give you personalized, adaptive tutoring.

Other scenarios to test are practice conversations, whether you're working up to an interview or a difficult family chat. Google says Gemini Live offers "an approachable practice environment to build your confidence and refine your communication skills".
