The new iPod shuffle has been completely redesigned from the ground up. It's less than half the size of the previous shuffle and comes with an aluminium case that has a special clip on the back, so that you can attach it to your clothing.

In fact, it looks very like Apple's Radio Remote accessory, except that the whole thing is enclosed in a silver aluminium skin and has the same styling as the new iPod nanos, including the rounded corners.

The clip is strong enough that we didn't experience any problems with the iPod shuffle detaching itself, even while jogging.

Despite its new shape, it's essentially the same product as the last shuffle - there's still no screen and you're still limited to playing music in shuffle mode or in sequence. You control the iPod shuffle with the familiar circular control pad, and Apple has managed to keep the useful battery indicator, which shows a green light when charge is good and a red light when low.

Unlike the previous version, the new iPod shuffle doesn't have a USB port, so you need to use a special dock to sync it with your Mac, which is supplied in the box. Battery life is a mere 12 hours, but for a device this small that's really impressive and more than adequate. In our tests, it actually exceeded 12 hours of continuous playback.

Again, we think this iPod shuffle is going to be another big hit for Apple. It's so small you won't believe you can cram 240 songs into it! Graham Barlow
