Say (Fro)Yo to the latest Android firmware

T-Mobile has confirmed the release of Android 2.2 for its HTC Desire customers, telling TechRadar "we are aiming to roll out in September," adding that the network is unable to give a specific date at this stage.

HTC itself earlier today announced that the over-the-air rollout the Android 2.2 update to HTC Desire phones would begin this weekend for unlocked phones.

"Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks' time," said HTC.

And T-Mobile seems to be first out the gate with confirmation that it'll be bringing it to its handsets.

New features

Android 2.2 - or Froyo to its friends - brings a host of new features and functionality, including making your mobile a WiFi hotspot and support for Flash.

The HTC Desire is one of the flagship Android devices, a close brother to Google's own Nexus One, and the latest firmware will be very much appreciated by owners of the handset.

15. Just done a manual check, and still says no update available... I call T-mobile, and all they could do was look at their website and then do a quick Google, and they still couldn't find out about the update! Anyway, I called HTC directly, and they told me that t-mobile released the update on Saturday (18th) but it is only being released in batches, not to everyone at the same time... I just have to be patient (which I'm not very good at!)

11. nitrofan, the reason that some of us (well, me at least) are waiting so (im)patiently for this update, is that we're pretty annoyed about the ridiculously small internal memory of the Desire meaning we can't install all of the apps we want. And I for one don't want to risk rooting my handset, just to use the apps2sd functionality. It seems like every other day I have to remove another app or two, because there is not enough memory free to install important updates...

Maybe those out there who are complaining about such a short wait to get what is after all JUST a software upgrade for a mobile phone, need to take along hard look at their lives? there just HAS to be more important things surely

7. I must have an unbranded HTC Desire after all. I installed it earlier.

You need 25Mb free storage and Wifi is recommended (it's 90Mb) but all went swiftly it took about 15 minutes to upgrade from start to finish. Once you've kicked it off though, there's nothing more to click. Nothing is lost either.

6. I've given up hope and am going to root, it all looks very simple and by the way things look HTC may not bring Gingerbread to the desire and so rooting may be the only way to get it. Might be better in case they fix the loophole in the froyo update.

5. This way too slow update schedule from T-mobile, T-mobile listen to your customers and take action from user feedback, the 2.2 must be rolled out quicker.

3. I believe that if you don't have the t mobile screen at boot up or any kind of operator indication when you start up or in the apps then it is a unbranded one. If so enjoy froyo!!!!

2. September is a month! Lets have some perspective. It took the upgrade for the HTC Hero much, much longer.

I bought mine unlocked/unbranded from a third party but on T-Mobile. Does this mean I'll get it soon or September? What actually constitutes as an "unlocked/unbranded" handheld?

Surely it's still the operator who push out these updates?
