Nicolas Chartier, the producer of Hurt Locker, has sparked a war of words with a cinemagoer, after his decision to sue BitTorrent users who downloaded the Oscar-winning film was criticised.
A reader of BoingBoing contacted the producer saying he disagreed with the move and, to his surprise, he got a rather rash reply.
In the email, which is printed on BoingBoing in full, Chartier said:
"If you think it's normal they take my work for free, I'm sure you will give away all your furniture and possessions and your family will do the same… I'm glad you're a moron who believes stealing is right.
"I hope your family and your kids end up in jail one day for stealing so maybe they can be taught the difference."
The rather sarcastic email continued: "Please do not download, rent, or pay for my movies, I actually like smart and more important HONEST people to watch my films."
Ouch.
Pirate points of view
To be fair, the Boing Boing reader did tell Chartier that he was "boycotting" his films because of "Voltage Pictures' intention to sue thousands of people".
We're suspecting, though, that we wasn't expecting that kind of candid response.
Hurt Locker was the winner of this year's Oscar for Best Picture. Since then, the movie has gone on to make $16 million in the US.
The film was reportedly pirated a massive six months before its release in the cinemas, something which Voltage Pictures is singling out as the reason for the movie's moderate revenue.

5. I wouldn't pirate the film for the same reason I didn't buy it. My friend bought it and said it was rubbish.

4. I love it when the "holier than thou" pirates get called what they are - thieves. The white heat of righteous indignation that it provokes provides many hours of amused reading. It's like the American "Tea Bagger" movement pretending not to be a bunch of ignorant racists. They're fine until someone point out their ignorant racism, then they go ape****. If the pirates had the balls to respond "yeah, you're right, but you know what, I don't care" when someone legitimately called them thieves, then it would be much better. All this post-event rationalising is just ******** of the first order.

1. Well Chartier, having seen The Hurt Locker and finding it a very poor movie I am rather glad I did not buy it. I would have felt well and truly raped up the a*se if I had paid £15 for that film. I personally see merit in the try before you buy method. I have a vast DVD & Bluray collection all purchased at full retail price. However I make a point of only buying quality productions. The Hurt Locker sucked on so many levels it's not true. I wouldn't have it in my collection if it was free. Chartier should feel ashamed for peddling such cr*p. It just proves that the Oscars is just another marketing vehicle. Oh and for the idiot wishing bad will on the guys kids, that just shows what a **** he really is.
