Today's Wordle answer (game #1955) is… GEEKY.
GEEKY is a pretty accurate description of me, as anyone who reads this column will know by now. Did that help me to solve this Wordle? Not really, but I'm happy enough with my result anyway.
I scored a 4, which is actually decent given that the average is currently 4.5. And yes, the 'Bot — which is now firmly back on form — beat that with a 3, but given the way my game panned out, I couldn't have done much better here.
It's clear why GEEKY is a tricky character. It has that repeated E pattern in the middle, which is doubly frustrating because a) uncovering a repeated letter is usually tough and b) there are lots of words with a similar format. Add to that the fact that G and K are relatively uncommon letters and you have the ingredients for a difficult Wordle.
SANER, my opening guess, was not particularly helpful in that it only gave me a single yellow E, so I took the thought-free approach to my second attempt and played CLOUT. There really was no strategy behind this other than playing five of the most common remaining letters — I didn't have an idea at this stage of what kind of word I was looking for.
Nor did I have much of a clue after my second guess, because CLOUT drew a blank. WordleBot told me afterwards that it would have expected it to leave eight options, but instead it left 16 — far too many for me to hope for a 3 now, surely?
I was able to rule out one at least — because I remembered PEEVE from only a few weeks ago. But I had several other EE words in there, including BEEFY, WEEDY and WEEPY, plus a disparate bunch of others including PIXIE, GIMME, EDIFY, DEIFY, WEDGE, HEDGE and WEIGH. Lots of Es, lots of Ws, lots of Ys, then — so I played WEEDY next as it seemed like a good choice to narrow them down.
If I had a better memory I'd have recalled that WEEDY has already appeared, about 18 months ago, but no matter because it did a decent job by cutting the field to only two options, BEEFY and GEEKY. I decided to go with the one that resonated with me and was rewarded with my 4.
Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1954)
In a different time zone where it's still Sunday? Don't worry — I can give you some clues for Wordle #1954, too.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1954) was… DRESS.
S is not a common ending letter in Wordle, because S-ending plurals are not allowed in the game. However, if an S is in that spot, there's a decent chance it will be part of a double-letter pairing.
There have been 30 S-ending answers in Wordle so far, and of those 17 have been SS words, compared to 13 with a single S there.
Some have proved to be tricky, with the likes of CLASS and AMASS being well above 4.0, but most have been on the easier side and the average among the games I have a score for is 3.89.

This game is seemingly easier still, with a current average of 3.7, helped no doubt by the fact that it also includes an R and an E, two letters that feature in many popular start words.
However, trouble lurks round the corner in this game, because it could be considered a too-many-answers Wordle; PRESS, TRESS, DRESS, CRESS and DROSS all differ by only a single letter, and all were played by fairly large numbers of people.
With S, R and E in my opening SANER, I had a very nice first guess and a shortlist that was already reduced to 21 options. I probably should have turned that into a 3, but my second guess of HORSE was unlucky and still left eight options.
PRESS was not much more successful, but it did at least confirm the structure of the word and gave me a choice of three: DRESS, CRESS and TRESS. I might still have ended up with a six if things had gone badly here, and probably should have picked another narrowing-down word to guarantee myself a 5. But having scored a 5 yesterday I didn't want to do that, so instead took a risk with DRESS and finished with a 4.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2026.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4a. Answers are never plural.
4b. …unless they are. There have been a couple of plural words that don't end in an S or ES, including FUNGI (game #439), ATRIA (#1478) and TEETH (#1551). But S and ES plurals are definitely outlawed.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10a. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions…
10b. …unless they are not. That's because the NYT has added in some of its own words which weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
10c. Plus, the NYT has now started repeating answers that have already appeared in Wordle. We have no idea how often it will do this, so you'll need to be on your guard.
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4a above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
