  • Sony has unveiled a new 200MP sensor for smartphone cameras
  • At 1/1.12 inches, this is reportedly the world's largest 200MP smartphone sensor
  • It's likely to first be used by phones from Oppo and Vivo

Sony has just unveiled the 200MP LYTIA LYT-901 smartphone camera sensor, and at 1/1.12 inches, it’s reportedly the world’s largest 200MP sensor.

We say 'reportedly' because Sony’s own press release doesn’t appear to make such a claim, but reputable leaker @sondesix has done so on X.

Either way, it’s a big sensor, and its specs include 0.7 µm pixels, up to 4x zoom (through cropping into the sensor), and – like most things nowadays – there’s also AI baked in, to speed up processing and deliver superior reproduction of details in images and videos.

Vivo and Oppo could be first in line

So, it sounds like an impressive camera, but the big question now is: which phones will actually be equipped with it?

So far, there’s nothing confirmed on that front, but @sondesix claims that the Vivo X300 Ultra and Oppo Find X9 Ultra will both use this sensor.

We’ve also heard from reputable leaker @UniverseIce that phones from Xiaomi and Honor could be equipped with it. They don’t name specific models, but we’d expect it to be limited to high-end handsets, so perhaps, for example, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max – although leaks haven’t mentioned it having this sensor, so don’t count on it.

In any case, it sounds like Chinese brands will be the main manufacturers to embrace this new Sony sensor, with @UniverseIce adding that Samsung won’t be using it, at least not any time soon. So, don’t expect to see it on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra or even the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra.

We also doubt that any iPhones will get this sensor, as for whatever reason, Apple seems to prefer lower-megapixel options.

We’ll probably see what this camera is capable of in March, as that’s when the Vivo X300 Ultra is rumored to be launching – though initially probably just in China. Then, in April, we might see the Oppo Find X9 Ultra equipped with it.
