Barnes and Noble cuts Nook Tablet prices for the holidays
Nook prices play catch-up before the holidays arrive
As the Nook HD and Nook HD+ begin to arrive this week, Barnes & Noble has slashed the prices on its current Nook models.
Three Nook models drop in price this week, starting with the 16GB Nook Tablet dropping to $179 from $199.
The 8GB Nook Tablet is also $20 cheaper now with a new price of $159 while the Nook Color shaves $10 of the price to make it $139.
The price cuts are not exactly earth shattering, though a lower price going into the holiday season is always appreciated by shoppers.
Priced to compete
The price changes should help Barnes & Noble catch up to direct competitors like the Kindle Fire. The Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire are now evenly matched in price while the Nook Color is comfortably priced below Amazon's color-capable ebook reader.
It also puts some price distance between the 16GB Nook Tablet and new 8GB Nook HD, which cost the same before the drop.
The Nook HD and Nook HD+ have their own competitive hurdles to overcome, as their pricing puts the new Nooks square in the crosshairs of the proven successful Nexus 7 and vying for popularity against the iPad mini.

The price cuts could be seen as a troubling sign for Barnes & Noble, coming less than three months after the last cuts on the exact same Nook models. However, with the new pricing in place the Nook line is in a much better position heading into the holiday shopping rush.
