Why the new Dell XPS 14 is a dream for working on-the-go
From a long battery life to smart security features, the XPS 14 has it all
TL;DR
- Dell's XPS 14 has all-day battery life, with a claimed longevity of up to 31 hours on a single charge, so you won't find yourself running out of juice when you're miles away from any power sockets
- The XPS 14 is highly compact and very thin and lightweight, so it'll easily fit into a bag, backpack or briefcase, allowing you to take it anywhere with no fuss. It's also an impressively durable laptop to cope with life on the move
- Dell has ensured that the XPS 14 is a quiet laptop, as well, so fan noise won't distract you – or bother other people in public spaces or shared offices – plus it has some innovative security features that are great for work on-the-go, too
A laptop that wasn't portable wouldn't be much use. Okay, so that's stating the obvious – they're even called 'portables' sometimes for that exact reason. Of course, it's also clearly true that some notebooks are a lot easier to carry around with you than others, and Dell's new XPS 14 truly shines in this department.
If you're often working away from home (or the office), you'll need your laptop with you, and you'll want the device to cover some key bases in terms of coping with life on the move. That includes having enough battery life to last an entire working day (or more), and being durable enough so that if the laptop takes the odd knock on its travels, you don't have to worry about it.
This article will explore how the Dell XPS 14 scores highly in these departments – and others besides – making it an ideal laptop for working on-the-go, whether you're heading to a café for a working lunch, or you're off on a long work trip.
Does the Dell XPS 14 have enough battery life to ensure I don't run out of charge when I'm away from a power socket?
The XPS 14 boasts an impressive all-day battery life, meaning this isn't a laptop that'll leave you short on power on your travels.
To be precise, Dell has measured the battery life of the XPS 14 at up to 31 hours1, so technically that's more than a working day of longevity on the move (although as is always the case, battery life will depend on what you're using the laptop for).
This battery longevity is made possible by a couple of key innovations. Firstly, the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) CPU in the XPS 14 is a major upgrade in terms of power-efficiency over its predecessor (and Lunar Lake was already impressive in that regard). According to Intel, Panther Lake uses 40% less power compared to Lunar Lake when operating at "similar single-thread performance", which is a massive saving, and one that very much helps extend battery life.
The second innovation here is the construction of the battery itself, with Dell achieving an industry-first in using 900ED battery cells. What this means is that the cells in this battery have a higher energy density than other hardware out there, packing more power into a smaller space. In short, the battery is more powerful relative to its size, and this is obviously very helpful in terms of prolonging the laptop's life on a single charge.
In fact, Dell says that the XPS 14 has the best battery life of any 14-inch notebook on the market currently. So, if you want a laptop with some serious battery stamina for your work when on your travels – a device that'll prove its worth particularly on longer perhaps multi-day business trips – the XPS 14 delivers efficiency and longevity in spades.
Is the Dell XPS 14 a laptop that I can easily take with me wherever I'm going?
Yes, you can take the XPS 14 pretty much anywhere as it's a thin-and-light device which scores highly in terms of portability.
Dell's XPS 14 is an ultra-thin notebook which measures just 14.6mm (that's for the OLED version, the model with an LCD screen is 15.2mm). This is a major reduction in size compared to its predecessor, the Dell XPS 14 (2025), which was 18mm (and that's still relatively trim).
The XPS 14 also has an impressively compact footprint at 210mm x 310mm and it's a lightweight device at 1.36kg. What this means is that it's very portable and easy to slip in a small bag, rucksack or briefcase to take with you to a conference or meeting, say, or a trip abroad where space for packing is at a premium.
How about noise levels when I'm out and about with the Dell XPS 14 – is it a quiet laptop?
The XPS 14 is commendably quiet, and Dell has made some important advances with the cooling solution for this laptop.
Dell's redesigned cooling system in the XPS 14 benefits from a wider 8mm heat pipe for improved thermal performance. On top of that, Dell has incorporated the largest and thinnest fans it has ever made in this laptop, which contributes to better airflow and therefore improved cooling from the dual fans in the chassis.
In fact, those fans are up to 61% larger than in previous Dell notebooks, and that makes a big difference in terms of the laptop running considerably quieter than its predecessor models.
So, when you're working, this notebook does a great job of keeping any fan noise in check, ensuring there's no danger of you getting distracted by this kind of noise pollution. If you're in a public place like a café, or a shared office space, the other people present will doubtless appreciate the subtly quiet nature of the XPS 14, too.
Finally, it's worth noting that for those who like to use a notebook with the device actually sitting in their lap, the new cooling system means the bottom of the XPS 14's chassis is 5°C cooler, so your thighs won't be getting hot and bothered.
What about durability – is the XPS 14 a robust enough laptop to survive life on the move?
Dell has ensured that the XPS 14 is a durable laptop with a strong and seamless unibody chassis.
The XPS 14 is fashioned from CNC machined aluminum with a seamless unibody construction, with Dell noting that it's sturdier than previous XPS notebooks due to integrating the side walls of the chassis with the base for a higher level of rigidity.
Dell also performs MIL-STD testing on the XPS 14 to ensure its robustness. For example, the laptop has been tested to withstand up to 1,200 micro-drops without losing functionality (based on an internal Dell analysis and three rounds of testing conducted in August 2025).
In short, this laptop has a very solid build quality, and it feels sturdy, despite the light nature of the device. It's also able to cope with any knocks, bumps or scrapes that daily life might inflict on the device, which can sometimes be unavoidable. We've all been on a packed and cramped commuter train where somebody has accidentally bumped into us, after all.
The screen is suitably robust, too, and with the Dell XPS 14 that has an OLED display, you get Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for additional protection against any drops or scratches. The high-quality touchpad on the XPS 14 is made from Gorilla Glass 3, too, making it both durable and very slick-feeling in use.
Are there any other notable strengths of the Dell XPS 14 for working on the move?
Yes, the XPS 14 offers some useful security features for life on the road, as well as a smartly designed webcam that offers a great video chatting experience wherever you may find yourself.
In terms of security, an innovative feature is that all the USB-C (Thunderbolt 4) ports on the XPS 14 can be used as Kensington lock slots (thanks to a patent-pending lock mechanism from Dell, in partnership with Kensington). This means you can use any free USB connector to secure your laptop when you're using it away from home in a public place – a bit like the notebook equivalent of padlocking your bike.
Additionally, with the XPS 14 you get Dell SafeID with discrete TPM, a dedicated security chip (TPM 2.0) that stores encryption and signing keys for the likes of BitLocker or Windows Hello in a secure manner.
Speaking of Windows Hello, this secure login is facilitated by the XPS 14's webcam (via infrared facial recognition) which is notable because it's another industry-first from Dell due to it boasting an ultra-narrow 940nm design. This means the webcam fits sleekly into the thin bezel at the top of the screen, and yet doesn't compromise on image quality, sporting an improved 8-megapixel sensor for high-quality video when you need to make calls on the move.
The various Copilot+ AI tricks that are available on the XPS 14 (thanks to the Windows Effects Studio suite) can also improve the lighting on your video calls, minimize any background noise, or make it seem like you're maintaining eye contact when you aren't looking at the camera. If you do a lot of videoconferencing or chatting with clients on your travels, the XPS 14 is a strong choice for a notebook.
It's also worth noting that the XPS 14 supports Windows 11's presence sensing feature, so it can automatically sleep (and lock itself) when you move away from the laptop – and wake when you come back – which is a smart security feature if you're using your laptop in a shared office space, for example.
