Dell's Studio range was created to plug the gap between its entry-level consumer Inspiron range and high-end XPS models.

The Dell Studio 15 (£649 inc. VAT) is currently the smallest Studio laptop you can buy and, like the bigger Studio 17, draws its styling directly from XPS models.

As such, you'll find the same wedge-shaped profile, range of coloured lids and stylish features, such as the slot-loading optical drive. Build quality isn't quite as good as the more expensive XPS models, with plastic used in place of brushed aluminium. You'll be able to customise the machine, with a range of different trim, colours and patterns available.

Excellent screen

The Studio 15 has one of the best screens we've seen to date on a mainstream laptop. Images appeared sharp and clear on the 15.4-inch Super-TFT panel, with more than enough space to open multiple documents simultaneously.

The display impressed most with its excellent colour reproduction – it uses LED backlighting to offer the most accurate colours, and is also very bright.

Demanding tasks can be carried out on the Dell thanks to the use of a dedicated ATi graphics card. It's a mid-level solution, but video editing shouldn't be a problem and we were also able to play a range of mid-level games.

Backlit keyboard

The Studio 15's spacious keyboard offers tactile keys and they move near silently. The board does flex slightly as you type, but the extra travel makes this the laptop of choice for those seeking comfort. It's also the first mainstream machine we've seen to feature a backlit keyboard – making it easy to type in all conditions.

There are no compromises when it comes to performance, with Intel Centrino 2 branding and a mid-range Intel Core 2 Duo processor in place.

It's backed by 2048MB of memory. Performance is boosted by the 160GB hard drive, which spins at 7200rpm for the fastest access to data. Battery life isn't great, however, lasting for under three hours between charges.

Impressive laptop spec

A fingerprint scanner adds security and makes it easier to switch between accounts, and Bluetooth is provided for wireless file transfers. There's a multi-format slot-loading DVD drive, which is more robust than a traditional pop-out optical drive and also adds a premium feel.

A host of touch-sensitive buttons above the keyboard let you control your CDs, DVDs and media files with ease.

Offering impressive comfort and a comprehensive specification, the Dell Studio 15 is one of the best mainstream laptops you can buy.
