If you're looking for our HTC Desire HD coverage, then check out HTC Desire HD vs iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S instead.
The world has been forced to live with sub-standard smartphone experiences for years; putting up with a huge number of foibles in order to access the latest tech.
Want GPS on your Nokia N95? Get used to low battery and a slow UI. Want to record video? You'd be better off sketching what you see rather than try and decipher the blocky mess you're left with.
But now most smartphones are getting to the stage where there's very little wrong at all – no longer is there a compromise to be made.
So let's take a look at the top three in the world at the moment and see which phone gives you the most for your cash:
Interface

iPhone 4
The iOS4 interface is more evolution than revolution, but that doesn't mean it's not a lot better than before. Things like double tapping the home button to call up multitasking and iPod controls work well, and the menu system is as familiar as ever.
However, the time is right for Apple to start thinking about widgets – people might have been scared before, but now iPhone users are starting to 'get' what smartphones are about, and a few things like weather widgets wouldn't go amiss – it's not always 23 degrees and sunny.
HTC Desire
The HTC Sense UI is one of the best overlays we've seen on a mobile – it's the perfect blend of style and functionality.
From being able to pinch the screen to see all Home screens at once to the integrated social networking in the contacts menu, the overall feeling is one of intuition.

Granted, it takes a while to set up, but once done you're sorted for the entire journey with your new phone.
Samsung Galaxy S
Adding the TouchWiz 3.0 interface was a good move for Samsung, as it offers more than the basic Android overlay we've seen on its other Android phones.
Seven Home screens are accessible for widget and icon dropping, and the menu system is simple to use.
However, the widgets on offer are woeful – why are there so few available, Samsung?
The contacts menu is better, but a little convoluted compared to the intuitive Sense UI.

31. i love this review.
it shows a fair opinion about these great gadgets.
i have the HTC desire for a month now, and i still couldnt get over how amazing the phone is.
the 1GHZ processor never let me down.
multitasking on this phone will impress you because there will zero compromise on speed.
internet browsing is impressively fast and the LED screen is very nice especially for book readings and watching movies.
i guess, when it comes to iphone4 and galaxy-s, this phone has good chances of winning it hands-down. the specs and performance says it all.
and the price that goes with the phone is also decent.
i am a proud owner of desire.
this phone has never let me down.
of course, there's the battery problem. but my friends are also users of galaxy-s and iphone-4 and they say that short battery life with smartphones nowadays are normal.
i am using 3rd party softwares to expand my battery life and i guess that solves my problem with decent results.
i recommend this phone to anyone..
you'll never be sorry. (-__-)v

29. "Also is there a central marketplace to get reliable apps for the Desire and will any Android app work on any Android phone (as long as you have the current OS)?"
Desire is a great or good phone if you want the apps to work. As it has 1ghz of prossessing speed and a large screen size, and the reason I said screen size is because most android games, web search, other app are developed either smaller or equ to Desire's screen size....
p.s- sorry about my grammer, I usally type like this on the internet.

I have a HTC Legend, I know it is different from desire. But considering that an iphone4 can't even get a bar on a open highway or in a city (griping the normal way) I just dont see a reason to buy iphone4. Also there are flaws to every phone.Slowness usally is just caused by encifficent space. and what the critic did not point out was the fact that when you call sombody and talked for a period of time and swet. The phone will usally give you the disrespondent attitude( meaning the screen will not respond in a correct way, because it is sensing the heat liqid swet you left on it) Htc uses what I call "body heat contect senser"which senses your heat contect signiture..... so you get the idea. What the critic described, to me is very real.

26. I've been looking at all the reviews between the different flavours of Android phones and even the iPhone. I've been pretty much Blackberry up to this point, but after using a friend's Desire and my cousin's Samsung Vibrant I've sorta been bitten by these touchscreen phones. I don't know about the Torch as I've heard issues with sluggishness on them so right now it's between an Android phone or the iPhone 4. The comments here all seem to point to the HTC as the go to phone, but how reliable are HTC phones? Also is there a central marketplace to get reliable apps for the Desire and will any Android app work on any Android phone (as long as you have the current OS)?
I've read/heard about some faults on the iPhone 4 and truthfully a coworker who has the phone showed me the infamous "death grip", but who the hell holds their phone that way when making a call? I just found the "antennae gate" more hype than actual useful info. My coworker says she hasn't experienced any dropped calls since owning the phone nor has her phone crashed. Are there any faults with the Desire? Any problems that I might experience? From the comments left by actual users it seems the Desire is faultless, but I would like to know if it will be the phone for me.

25. The one thing that separates the vibrant from all these phones is that it plays high quality FLAC music files and if i'm not mistaken not many if any other mobile can make that claim. So to me that alone would make the vibrant the best media phone on the market even beating the iphone. Mp3's sound like **** so having the ability to play high quality music files makes this an audiophiles dream device.

I am new to smartphones and while I love my Samsung Galaxy there are still features I haven't worked out, or used yet. How do i find and enable Flash Lite?

23. That might be a little harsh as a 32gb sd is like 90 quid. The Iphone unlocked is still a proper investment, Specially if an mp3 players worth of memory Isn't needed.

21. Q, Does the Desire not come with a 4gb microSD card?
A, Just got mine from T-Mobile and it did come with a 4GB microSD Card.
Hope that answered your question.

17. @wowminister doesn't google download the route when you plan it? Not much cop if you detour into a place with poor data reception, of course. A place like ALL OF SCOTLAND :)
You're right though, tomtom is the pricey one.

I think free sat nav is a great concept if we are talking about Google Maps but remember that it's not a solution that stands up in areas of poor data reception as the maps are downloaded on the fly.
Also the Iphones most expensive sat nave program is TomTom. Others come in at free to £25. The same price btw as equivalent sat nav prigs on android.

15. "Are you sure it'll be disabled by default? I imagine it will depend on the carriers. Froyo brings USB Modem Tethering but HTC have already added it to the Legend/Desire/Wildfire and it works out of the box with Desires from T-Mobile. I doubt Wifi Hotspots is as clear case as you make it."
On the current 2.2 build for the desire from HTC you can set the APN for any carrier. No current carrier has a build for any device that allows WiFi hotspots by default. You will need to flash the device with an unbranded rom for use without a dedicated data plan.
This is not an issue if you know what you are doing except that the Desire does not have the facility to flash unless you use Goldcards or Fast Flash recovery. Most users will not go into that process so it will leave the hot spot capability only available using the paid alternative.

14. @ dyonas: Good point about left/right hands. I too am right handed but hold all phones in my left hand. This problem will affect right handed people, not left handed.
"Is that the same openness that is set by the carriers. For example, the wifi hotspot on the (when it arrives) Froyo update for Desire is disabled due to them not wanting it to be available. Of course this can be overridden by Rooting (or jailbreak on an iPhone for fairness)."
