In the digital art industry, tech companies are actively exploring the potential of smart chip solutions to develop more advanced stylus technology that empowers creatives with a more intuitive and expressive experience.

Yet despite these efforts, a persistent gap remains between the promise of digital tools and the natural fluidity artists need to truly express their vision.

The challenge manifests in familiar frustrations – fractional delays that disrupt the flow of a stroke, subtle wobbles that undermine precision linework, and the need to press harder than feels natural just to register input.

These technical limitations might seem minor in isolation, but collectively, they create constant friction between an artist's intention and execution – the difference between seamless creative flow and an ongoing battle against one's tools.

Picture this – you're working on a detailed illustration, building up delicate layers of shadow and light. Your hand moves instinctively, varying pressure to create the perfect gradient – but your stylus doesn't quite keep up.

For digital artists, the relationship between pen and canvas is sacred. Traditional artists have centuries of refined tools – pencils with varying hardness, brushes with different spring and flow, and nibs that respond to the subtlest touch.

For digital artists, the challenge isn't simply matching traditional tools – it's creating something that feels so natural, so immediate, that the technology itself becomes invisible.

The Artist 12 3rd – a new dial shortcut portable display – debuts the fully-upgraded X4 Smart Chip Stylus, representing nearly 18 months of development and over 100 prototype tests.

In short, it's reimagining what digital pen technology can achieve when performance, precision, and natural feel converge. Compared to entry-level styluses, the X4 integrates a 4th-gen EMR chip, 16,384 pressure levels, and magnetic attachment – balancing high performance with portability and ease of use. Here's how.

Smarter than ever

At the heart of XPPen's latest offering lies the fourth-generation X4 smart chip – a testament to the company's continued investment in core technology development.

Building on the foundation of the X3 Pro chip that pioneered 16,384 pressure levels in 2023, the X4 represents a comprehensive evolution addressing the fundamental challenge every digital artist faces – achieving a drawing experience that feels as natural and immediate as pencil on paper.

Technologically, the Artist 12 3rd adopts XPPen's latest self-developed X4 smart chip stylus technology solution, which optimises the sensor at the hardware level and upgrades the magnetic core solution, significantly improving signal transmission and processing capabilities.

The new chip architecture also delivers a 50% improvement in response speed compared to its predecessor, and this enhanced processing power translates directly into reduced latency between pen movement and on-screen response, creating a more fluid and intuitive creative experience.

In real-world use, these benefits are clear. The reduced latency allows for natural drawing and sketching, without the regular pain points of lag and frustrating delays which plague other inferior offerings. Intricate things like detailed shading and delicate lines are all possible with XPPen’s system. The end result? Creators can unleash their vision exactly as they intended, with zero compromise.

XPPen's goal is clear – to “Deliver the most authentic and fluid experience for illustrators, animators, and 3D modellers,” states Brian Huang, Product Marketing Manager at XPPen.

One of the most significant upgrades is also pressure sensitivity. XPPen has doubled the pressure levels from 8,192 to an industry-leading 16,384 compared to the previous generation Artist 12 2nd and X3 chip stylus. – the highest available in the drawing display category.

This impressive increase in sensitivity captures far more nuanced variations in pen pressure, enabling smoother transitions in line weight and opacity.

Whether you're executing delicate cross-hatching or bold, sweeping gestures, the enhanced sensitivity faithfully reflects every subtle pressure change, allowing for greater expressiveness and control.

Elsewhere, first-stroke response time has been significantly reduced from 70ms to 30ms, making lag virtually imperceptible, while nib accuracy has improved from centre ±0.5mm to ±0.2mm for more precise positioning.

In other words, sketching your ideas out will feel as natural and as instant as pen on paper.

Precision engineering

Perhaps the most impressive technical achievement, is the reduction in initial activation force from 3 grams to just 2 grams. This might seem like a small change, but it’s a complex challenge, as it requires the chip’s sensor to accurately distinguish between the artist’s natural hand tremor and intentional light touch, placing unprecedented demands on EMR signal precision. This impressive achievement required breakthroughs across multiple engineering disciplines – sensing algorithms, pen tip mechanics, and electromagnetic coil tuning all had to work in perfect harmony.

With such a low activation threshold, even the lightest touches register accurately on screen – crucial for techniques like feathering, stippling, or laying down subtle colour washes.

XPPen's engineers have also addressed tip stability. Through the implementation of a bullet-shaped nib structure, the X4 stylus achieves an incredible 200% improvement in stability compared to previous generations.

This enhanced rigidity minimises wobble during use – particularly important when drawing straight lines or working with fine details.

The sensor system has been optimised as well, reducing pen travel distance from 0.6mm to 0.3mm, meaning that the stylus begins registering movement almost immediately upon contact with the screen surface.

The enhanced magnetic core solution also delivers more precise tilt recognition at angles up to 60 degrees, ensuring natural performance for both left and right-handed users, while accurately translating the stylus angle into varying line weights and textures for a more natural creative experience.

Design and functionality

The X4 Smart Chip Stylus represents another first for XPPen – it's the company's first ever electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus with magnetic attachment capability for drawing displays.

The magnetic attachment system allows the stylus to securely connect directly to the Artist 12 3rd's body, keeping it secure and immediately accessible, eliminating the risk of misplacing the stylus for mobile creators who work in cafes, studios, or while travelling.

Beyond its internal sophistication, the X4 stylus also features a modern, ergonomically refined exterior – its oval-shaped body prevents rolling on flat surfaces, while providing a more comfortable grip during extended use.

The future of digital drawing

The X4 Smart Chip Stylus represents XPPen's commitment to making professional-grade technology accessible.

The combination of doubled pressure levels, lower initial activation force, 50% faster response time, and 200% improved stability, creates a new benchmark for digital drawing tools.

The end result? Performance that lets artists focus entirely on creation, rather than frustratingly fighting their tools.

If you want to maximise your creativity and achieve your visions exactly as intended, the Artist 12 3rd and X4 Smart Chip Stylus are now available through the official XPPen store.
