Spotify app crashing when you play podcasts? You’re not alone – here’s what we know
- Users have reported Spotify crashing when they try to play podcasts
- The issue was cross-platform and wasn’t specific to any one podcast
- Spotify says it has now fixed the problem
If your Spotify app has been crashing whenever you play podcasts, you’re not the only one experiencing this frustrating issue. We’ve seen a large spike of reports on Downdetector and forums are filling up with complaints, but Spotify claims the issue should now be fixed.
Most reports seemed to center on users who attempted to play a podcast in the Spotify app on their mobile device. Doing so caused the app to crash, the reports said. On the official Spotify forum, for example, one user stated that playing a podcast crashed the app for them on both Android and iOS devices, and further added that this did not seem to be related to specific podcasts. Over on Reddit, Round_Yam1291 said that podcasts also crashed their app while music did not.
Those complaints were mirrored by large increases in reports seen at Downdetector. Within the last few hours, the US version of the site hit a high of 950 reports, while the UK version reached 419 reports.
For its part, Spotify reported on its official forum that, “We’re happy to say that this should now be fixed.” The company added: “If a restart of Spotify isn't helpful, consider performing a clean reinstall which would also ensure you’re on the latest app version,” before asking users to report any further problems on the Spotify forum.
Marked as fixed
It’s not known exactly what caused the issue or if it was limited to playing podcasts. While most complaints seemed to center on how the app responded to playing podcasts, some users reported other issues. Redditor Minute_University_98, for example, said their app was simply “crashing while trying to open.”
Before the bug was marked as fixed, I tried to replicate it on iOS and Windows. I simultaneously opened Spotify on my iPhone and my Windows PC, then tried playing a podcast from the iOS app.
Curiously, the podcast played fine on my iPhone, but Spotify crashed on my Windows PC – without me actually using it. Reopening the app on Windows and playing podcasts on iOS did not replicate the crash, so it’s unclear if there is a repeatable scenario that was responsible for the crashing.

Still, with Spotify confident that it has fixed the error, we’re hoping that users will no longer experience this crash when trying to play podcasts in the Spotify app.
