- Netflix has released a new show starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal
- His & Hers is a six-part TV adaptation of Alison Feeney's crime novel of the same name
- Critical reactions have been mixed, but reviewers are in agreement about its ending
We're one week into 2026 – at the time of publication, anyway – and Netflix appears to have the first discussion-generating TV show of the year on its hands.
Released today (January 8), His & Hers is a six-part adaptation of Alison Feeney's crime novel of the same name. The new Netflix series stars Marvel actors Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, and sees the pair play an investigative journalist and police detective who lock horns as they examine the same murder-mystery case. The fact that they share a romantic history only adds more spice to an already powder-keg setup.
So, is His & Hers worth pressing play on, or should you skip it for something else on one of the world's best streaming services? Early critical reactions for the crime thriller have been mixed at best, with reviewers primarily divided over how its story is executed.
Let's start with those who have positive things to say. On IGN, Michael Peyton gave His & Hers a 9 out of 10 rating. Writing that it "starts off as a typical murder mystery", Peyton adds that it "eventually evolves into an examination of grief, marriage, and parenthood... and keeps you hooked from beginning to end".
Over on Variety, Aramide Tinubu called it "deliciously bonkers" and "one of the most unhinged shows ever seen on television". In her 3.5 out of 5 review for The Guardian, Lucy Mangan also had good things to say; describing His & Hers as a "bingeable endeavour" and the kind of "comfort television" that we need this early in the year.
Mangan wasn't fully sold on the limited series, though, with The Guardian critic also saying "the absurdities, they multiply" and that "the script is... serviceable".
Similar sentiments were expressed by other outlets. Looper's Reuben Baron wrote that it had "shock value but lacked smarts", The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg opined that Bernthal and Thompson "generate minimal heat in Netflix's disappointing thriller, and Time Magazine's Judy Berman called it "too grim to be fun, too silly to take seriously".

One thing that everyone could fully agree on, though, is the shocking twist that occurs in His & Hers' finale.
Don't worry, I won't spoil how it ends, but critics have described being blindsided by a hugely unexpected plot development in its sixth episode. Indeed, whether it's Tinubu writing "I literally sat in shock, screaming 'WHAT?!!' continually", Baron saying "you will NOT predict how it ends", or Peyton admitting it "achieves the rare feat of making you think long after the credits roll", His & Hers sounds like it's worth watching for its apparently extraordinary ending alone.
His & Hers is out now in full on Netflix.
