The optical zoom is excellent, as demonstrated in the above image taken at the same location as the image above. As well as showing the extent of the zoom at it's maximum reach, this image demonstrates the camera's ability to resolve detail and capture tonal graduation; this is really highlighted in the fine detail of the stone work behind the statues.
