Huawei's new foldable looks similar to the rumored iPhone Ultra — but Apple could still have a secret display weapon

Apple’s first foldable has been a long time coming, but the device — believed to be called the iPhone Ultra — is also expected to have some key differences from most existing foldables, including a wider aspect ratio for the internal screen.

But it’s not actually going to be the first phone with such an aspect ratio, as while the iPhone Ultra isn’t expected until September, Huawei has already shown off the wide-screen Pura X Max (via Phandroid) — which itself is a sequel to last year's Huawei Pura X — and confirmed that the device will fully launch on April 20.

Now, the Huawei Pura X Max is only expected to launch in China, but it does still give us a clearer idea of what the iPhone Ultra might look like, since the two phones are likely to have similar aspect ratios.

You can see the Huawei Pura X Max in the Sparrows News video above, and while its full specs aren’t yet known, Huawei has shared that it will come in Interstellar Blue, Olive Gold, Phantom Night Black, Vibrant Orange, and Zero Degree White shades. We also know that storage and RAM configurations will range from 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM to 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM.

Smarter glue for a smaller crease

But while Huawei is set to beat Apple to this aspect ratio — and Samsung is rumored to as well, with a phone that could be sold more widely than Huawei’s — Apple could still have a trick up its sleeve to help the iPhone Ultra stand out.

Specifically, the iPhone Ultra is widely rumored to have a near-invisible crease, and according to TrendForce (via 9to5Mac), a high-tech glue is key to achieving this.

This glue apparently remains liquid enough to “fill microscopic irregularities formed over long-term use” that can take the form of visible creases. This is unlikely to be the only tool Apple is using to reduce the crease size, but it could be a significant one, and might help ensure the iPhone Ultra is unlike any foldable we’ve seen before — even if the aspect ratio isn’t entirely novel by the time it launches.
