Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

We shoot a specially designed chart in carefully controlled conditions and the resulting images are analysed using DXO Analyzer software to generate the data to produce the graphs below.

A high signal to noise ratio (SNR) indicates a cleaner and better quality image.

For more more details on how to interpret our test data, check out our full explanation of our noise and dynamic range tests.

Here we compare the Pentax Optio LS465 with the Nikon S2600, Sony W690 and Canon A4000 IS. The Pentax has the widest sensitivity range of all the cameras here.

JPEG signal to noise ratio

Pentax Optio LS465

As we can see from this chart, the Pentax Optio LS465's JPEG files have a relatively weak signal to noise ratio compared to the other cameras here, showing weaker signal to noise ratios than JPEGs from the Canon A4000 IS at every sensitivity setting but ISO 800, though the Canon's top sensitivity setting is only ISO 1600, compared to the Pentax's ISO 6400. The Pentax's JPEGs also show weaker ratios than the Nikon S2600 at every sensitivity except ISO 800 and 1600. The Pentax's JPEGs show weaker signal to noise ratios than the Sony W690's JPEGs at ISO 100-400, but they're stronger than the Sony's at ISO 800 and above.

JPEG dynamic range

Pentax Optio LS465

The Pentax Optio LS465's JPEGs are again beaten by the Canon A4000 IS's JPEGs, which contain greater dynamic range at every sensitivity setting, though the Canon's range only extends as high as ISO 1600. The Pentax's JPEGs show weaker dynamic range than those from the Sony W690 at every sensitivity except ISO 800 and 3200, but the Pentax's JPEGs score higher than the Nikon S2600's at every sensitivity except ISO ISO 3200.
